This last year was my first year trapping I'm hooked and it's bad. I live in eastern New Mexico and the wind is always blowing. The first problem is bait, lure or urine gets covered up quite often. I know the odor will come through the dirt but I would prefer to keep as clear as possible. I think this year I'm going to try the "pipe dream" set or at least part of it. I thought using just the pipe would keep the bait and lure some what clear. My main targets are coyotes.
Second problem is wind blowing the pan clean. Any suggestions on how to correct these problems? I know with some of the winds we get that's going to be the nature or the beast.
I ended up with 17 yotes, 2 skunks and 1 badger. I tried some snaring and took two of the coyotes that way. I tried all kinds of sets that I read about, when it was all said and done I did the best with blind sets, a turd and some urine. Kinda makes me laugh I've seen pages and pages of trappers arguing about a specific lure and how trapping would end if they ever stopped making that lure. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

In western Oklahoma, it seems as if our wind blows most of the time as well. I often use my lure on a clump of grass. (Sometimes transplant the grass into an area that is barren). I also use a rock the same way.... I've even driven a stick into the ground at a slight angle with the same satisfying results (stck is about a foot above ground level and angled). By doing this, ya won't have to dig a hole for bat/lure. Almost any choice of lure or urine will work-----location is more important IMO. Bed your trap deeper if the wind is blowing the soil off of your pan.
These tactics may not be a "fit" for your needs but hopefully will give you something to think about....

I have never really trapped in those conditions. Looks like you did real good for your first year. And yes it is addicting.

koss2005, hey bro, mix 25% glycerin with your coyote urine this will help it stay at the set longer. I am not a big user coyote urine. Too selective. Fox or Bobcat works better. Look at your prevailing wind and set your traps according.
