My beagle, Buddy, started acting funny a few days ago. It started with him whining and favoring his back end and progressed to him not being able to get up or down off the couch without help. Within two days his back end was completely paralyzed. Beagles are prone to disc problems and my vet said since it happened so fast, he must have ruptured it completely and the chances of him ever regaining feeling were slim to none without an $8,000.00 surgery and only around 30% if he had it. As much as I wanted to help him $8,000.00 was out of the question.
We brought him home with some pain medicine, something to relax him and some steroids. The vet told me to prepare for the worst and if he didn't show any improvement in 72 hours, we'd have to put him down. We've been sitting with him, carrying him in and out so he could at least be out in the fresh air and We've been sleeping what little we've been able to on a foam mattress on the floor with him since Wednesday. He hasn't had any bladder, or bowel control, so things have been a mess.
We took him back to the vets this morning to have him put down and while he was on the table, he moved his back foot a little for the first time since this all started. Right after that he lifted his tail and wagged it a little. The vet could hardly believe it and it made me as happy as anything has in a long time.
He's got a long road ahead of him and we'll have to see how much he progresses with the the medicine and therapy we have to do with him here at home, but things sure are looking better than they were. Even if he fully heals, he won't be able to hunt anymore, but I've still got my best bud.
