Its the time of year guys or family members are cleaning out and selling old traps.
I'm a coon guy but being in Wisconsin means many more are rat men. I'm always hesitant about buying old traps especially from fmmily members because I'm not sure if the coils have Benn tempered for use on rats.
Is there an easy way to determine if the springs have had a torch to them after they've been painted?

Do they feel weak?
Its not a common practice here. I have never ran across it but I have heard of it.

Used to see traps offered at auctions that had been through a fire (shed or barn burned). Extremely weak. No real problem, replace springs, add chew bar(double jaw), and you have coon trap.

Weak springs should be easy to find I have a pile in the shed what you need to watch with the ones in a fire is the temper gone from the jaws and frames if the heat was intense enough they lose a lot of strength and will bend easily!

Does anyone have an idea of the poundage of typical 1.5 lever should need to push down? Might be a good way to determine a baseline. Maybe put a 20 lbs dumb bell on each lever?
