That’s great Jerry! I was hoping to take my little brothers out again on the youth opener here in Pennsylvania, but now one of my friends is getting married on that day, and he really wants me to be there. Why do people always have to get married on the first day of hunting or trapping season? 😩

Well the started out wet ,but we got into our blind about 6:00am.. 20 minutes after fly down. After setting up every thing , I let out a few yelps and got hammered with two gobblers down over some ledges, and one out behind us. They were all henned up. Knowing the hens were going to want to go and sit earlier than normal (because of the cold and rain), I told Jericho we were going to sit and wait, that they would be back soon. About 8:30am I heard the two gobblers down low, they had only two logging trails up from the bottom. One on our left and on our right. I coaxed them into about 50 yards, just out of range of Jericho's 410 shotgun. They were spit/drumming/dancing, I could here Jericho's heart pounding. It was awesome just seeing his reaction to these two birds. After about a half an hour , the two stopped dead and start looking over the stone wall to out backs, they then turned and took off running back down the trail. I could hear spitting and drumming behind us ,about 10 feet, lol,(on our blind side). After 5 minutes, he made it about 50 yards down from us to where we could see him, I believe he was the King of the hill, he was huge. Jericho's heart really started pounding. I started scratching the ground and purring and he went crazy. He jumped up on the wall, gobbled, jumped down and ran out to the logging trail and started working our way. He danced of the logging trail, into the woods across from us but kept coming our way. He finally made it to one of our shooting lane (22 paces,I have short legs). Jericho took the shot, the bird stepped back three steps rolled on its back and start flapping. My heart was pumping at this time. Then the bird jumped up, and started side stepping out threw the woods away from us and towards the ledges. Of coarse, the shell did not eject. I had no rod with me, so I jumped out found a thin branch and pushed the shell out. Put a new shell in. We went to where he hit it. Lots of blood, and only two upper breast feathers. It was good hit, but the 410 on that size bird did not have enough energy. We tracked this bird like a tracking a deer. Made it to the ledge top, it looks like he stood there before he jumped of the ledge and soared out of sight. I did not think a turkey could bleed like that..WOW.. Jericho was so upset. We searched the valley for 3 hours. I sure he coyote food by now. I am descent at guessing weights on critters. My biggest bird I shot was 23.8pounds,11.250" beard,1.250" hooks. This bird he hit put mine to shame.. He was the Boss bird in that area.

That sucks get him a single 20ga maybe for the next one. Heading out in the AM for one will see how it goes. WI last week was early lots of birds within 60-80 yards but not willing to come in for a look. It was 1st season we only heard 2 shots in 3 days with lots of hunters in the area.

He is still small for his age. Not sure if he could shoot a 20ga yet.I going to load up my old double barrel 16ga. for his next hunt.. That will give him a little more energy out to 35 to 40 yards, and a quick follow up shot if needed. Good Luck out there Jerry.

Picked up #3 today. Went out before sunup today it started out quiet no gobbles until well after dawn, one bird close in a draw he was responding well others further down another draw not so much. He got fired up and came to the top of the draw strutting but would not close the 60 yards between us so I waited for a better shot that never came. He dropped back into the draw with his hens and jakes so I worked my way closer still he stayed in the draw when I called but responded. Worked my way down a crooked trail and got him to respond he was strutting in a clearing just below my location. I was able to slip over the edge and seal the deal at 45 yards heavy shot dropped him on the spot! Went to pick him up and the birds that were still on the roost started to flush hens and a jake from the ones I did get to see, guessing the grass was so soaked from the heavy dew they were in no hurry to get soaked. 1 more to go before the end of the month!
