Hey, I'm real into coyote hunting, and we have alot of bears around her, so any time I go into the woods, I take a sawed off shotgun with 3" 00 buckshot loads, would thee work for fox and coyote if I saw one or is it little to big? if so, how far is the safe range for it? thanks!

If I recall, I thougth 00 was about 9 pellets. If the shot wasn't too close, I'd think it would be ok. Too close and you got nothin' but swiss cheese. LOL! If you're coyote hunting, wouldn't you use the gun you're coyote hunting with instead of the shotgun? Anyway, 'round here if you start calling, you'll get some song dogs coming in alright... timberwolves. Snareman

Well, last year I was just using a 22 for coyotes/fox, but I am not going to do that this year cause I don't think its bigg enough....but I am not really hunting now, mostly I am looking for moose sign, but since its coyote season, I was wonderin if it would work for em, I am takin the shot gun, because we have a ton of bears around here this year. But I don't want to ruin a hide on a coyote.... I might start packing the 44mag for bears and a 30-30 with accellerators in it for coyotes and fox, how does that sound? I'm new to the coyote hunting thing so I don't want to mess up and wound one...but I don't want to blow the whole side of a pelt out eather.

I use #4 buckshot or BB in copper plated , a R870 or Mossberg M500 and mod choke.

the smallest cal i would use for coyote would be a 22 mag with a well placed shot. ive had a few that were only wounded so u better get a good shot on em..you could also try a .17, 22-250 or a 223 good calibers for yotes

JMO but 243 with the right bullet is a great choice.

Right bullets are important no doubt, I will give the 243 a try.

well, the problem is, I don't have money for a new gun, tryin to make due with the ones I have, whats the range on say, no 2 buckshot? or is that stull to big for coyotes? if so what is a good size and the range for it with modified choke out of a 20 GA or a 12 GA modified.

#4 buck is a pretty good choice.....the only sure way to know the diff ranges would be to go out and test the different shots

#4 buck is a pretty good choice.....the only sure way to know the diff ranges would be to go out and test the different shots I agree each gun patterns a little different according to barrel length choke type and on and on.The best bet is spend a little time on paper learn what loads fit the gun best and how it shoots. As far as lethallity goes buck shoot can go at least 50 yards in the right gun.

How do I know if it has enough energy to not just go into the skin and wound it? I want as clean a kill as I can get, but if I used #$ buck, would 50 yards be the safe range with modified choke for a 12 ga? how bout a 20 GA, would it be more like 40?

50 yds should be alright to down a dog but thats a range where your patterning is gonna start messin up try to get em real close 10 to 20 yds trust me its funner that way..nothin better than havin a dog runnin at ya full blast only to be greeted with a shotgun at 5 to 10 yards away....ive seen my dad down a dog at 90+ yds with 00 buck ..no jk all it took was one pellet guess he just got lucky... i would practice shooting at 50 yds to see what kind of pattern your gonna have/drop, etc

Should I just get a 20 inch target and see how it hits?

yeah experiment with diff chokes also as you will want the tightest pattern possible

well, my 20 GA is a modified barrel...it doesn't have a removable choke, thats just how its made, I think the 12 GA has a removabe choke, it is a newer one than my 20 GA

Might want to stick with the 12 ga and 00 since there is the good chance of calling in a brown bear. Like has been said test it out on paper and establish your optimum range. A sheet of cardboard would be a good target and maybe start out at 50 yds. If you have some old plywood pieces to stack a couple inches thick behind your target you can get an idea on how well it penetrates at different ranges. But if you do call in a big bear you'd be much better off with the 12 and 00. You may find you're good on yotes out to 70 yds or so, but if they get too close you'll mangly them. Just some thoughts.

00 buck is fine up to 70 yds make sure you give em an extra blast when out that far.
