I just bought or was practically given 30 old foot hold traps. They are rusty and some looks like someone tried to clean them with grease and oil. I have tested them and they work so now got to get them cleaned.
Can anyone explain how to clean these and wax them please.
Thanks in advance for anyone who will help contribute.

Use a 5 clean 5 gallon bucket add 1 gallon of white vinegar to 2 gallons of water let soak a few days or till clean, once you take the traps out wash off with a pressure washer make sure you wash them good. next dye them with what ever kind of dye you use let dry really good next take a pretty good size kettle that is super clean and put trappers wax in the kettle and heat the wax till its liquid and then dip your traps in 1 to a time and hang in a dry place till the wax hardens and your all done!! I have yet to try the cleaning but i had a thread on this same subject not to long ago and this is what i was told by many to do, hope it helps you out!!
P.S. if your going to wax your traps i suggest to put a small nail in the jaws to keep them open so the wax will cover the face of the jaws!

Boiling in wood ash works also. The ash is a lye and also has slight abrasive qualities.

I HATE vinegar in any way, shape,or form. The smell kinda wants to make me puke.But...... it does one hell of a job cleaning traps and making them like new !!!!!!

I add some of ma's dishsoap to the boil pot. No dye, just heavy on the soap. Rinse em good and then hang in the trees for a couple weeks to let them rust. We get rain every weekend like clockwork so that helps! If they aren't rusty the dye won't stick real good. The oil on traps is more like a thin cosmoline and sticks like poop to a wool sock.
