Sometime back in February, two friends of mine from Wauconda, IL got together. One is a (Pat Yost) Wauconda cop, the other (Tom Goyette) is a local business man who owns a sign shop, and both have served in the military and protected our country along with fighting for our freedom. These two were talking about a 9-11 memorial since we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of this tragic event. They wanted to create a tribute to the civilians, military and public service personnel who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93.
Pat & Tom had brought this idea up to the Chief of Police. The Chief said that they may run into problems with the Village Board since tax dollars would be involved. These two gentlemen said it can and will be done without spending one cent of taxes. They were able to get this done through private donations from several groups. I will not disclose these donors since none of them want any recognition what so ever.
With Tom owning his own shop, the Village turned over a squad car to him. He covered the shop windows and started to strip the police stickers off and he went to town. There were very few of us that were allowed in his shop while this project was under way.
On Memorial Day, it was unveiled and was the first in line in the Wauconda parade.
I have to applaud these two for coming up with this idea. I do know several people who had died on that eventful day. I do admit that when I seen the final product, I did cry. It has the name of every victim that passed away in the twin towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
After the parade was through there was a Memorial Day service held there in town. Officer Pat Yost was called up to give his speech on this project. As he gave it, everyone in attendance was silent. You could have heard a pin drop as he went through his speech.
Great job guys and thank you for all that you have done!
