I hope you all are enjoying reading these entries out of my fathers log book as much as I am enjoying writing them. I will try to keep writing them on a day by day story just like it was happening now. Dad had a way of naming his set’s after a few days on the line so you will see sets like the pipe set or the chicken bone set that was just the way he was. His entries became more complex as the days went by so soon you will see lures come into play alone with the time of day each set was checked. Like I said earlier I will keep writing as long as I can until I get at least all of 1977 done.
Dad’s Log Book Day 2
Nov. 17, 1977
Ison’s Farm
Set # 1. The stump set made another catch today a little female red fox. I had to pull the set cause the stump was tore up bad so I made a dirt hole set about 2 foot in front of the stump, no bait and a new # 1 ½ trap.
Set # 2. Nothing in this dirt hole set, bait still in the hole.
Set # 3. The log set has a male coon, remade the set just as it was.
Set # 4. Yet another coon in the path going to the barn.
Set # 5. On the other side of the barn the trap was set off but had nothing in it.
Set # 6. This bank set had nothing in it but I put a piece of fried chicken in the hole today, may get lucky tomorrow.
Sets 7, 8, 9, and 10. All the sets around the trash pile made a catch last night, 2 possums, and 2 skunks.
Elliot’s Farm
Set # 1. The path under the gate had a male red fox in it today. I remade the set in hopes of getting one more before I have to move this trap so Tom can move his cow’s to another field.
Set # 2. Nothing in the dirt hole across the field.
Set # 3. Bait was gone at this dirt hole but the traps still set, put horse meat bait in the hole and see what tomorrow brings.
Set # 4. The pine tree set had another possum in it today, will leave this set one more day and see what happens.
Set # 5. Had another skunk at the den set today so I pulled this set and will find another place to make a new set.
Set # 6. A big male red fox where the 2 logging roads meet remade this set with horse meat down the hole.
Set # 7. This set had a skunk in it yesterday, today it has a small coon.
Set # 8. The left hand road was empty today may end up moving this set, some thing about it I just don’t like.
Set # 9. Nothing in the post set today.
The Creek Line
Set # 1. Got another big boar coon in the hold set on the in side bend today.
Set # 2. The root ball set was empty today, but had fresh coon tracks only feet a way from it.
Set # 3. Nothing in the rock set today.
Set # 4. The oak tree set has a nice little female coon for me today.
Set # 5. On the log going over the creek the moss was off the trap, must have been the wind last night, no fresh sign.
Set # 6. Another male coon in the path from the den trees to the water.
Set # 7. Nothing where I got the female mink yesterday fish still there.
Set # 8. I think the white pan trap is going to have to go out of this line so I replaced it with the trap I pulled from Elliot’s place.
Set # 9. The sand bar set had a small boar coon in it to day.
Set # 10. The chicken bone set was empty today.
Set # 11. Another mink this time a female at the pipe that I blocked off.
Set # 12. The set under the over hanging log had the biggest meanest coon in it that I have seen this far trapping, wish I had a way to get a weight on it, it has to be over 30 lbs.
2 day total out of 31 sets 16 coon, 8 fox. 5 possum, 5 skunks, and 4 mink.
