friends telling me a 1.5 will hold yotes just fine this true? i am used to useing #2s for yotes so a 1.5 seems a bit small. let me know what ya think.

imo a 1 1/5 will work fine if you really hate skinning yotes and really like rebuilding traps

How many coyotes have your friends caught and how many have they caught in 11/2's? I have caught them in 11/2's but did not set 11/2's for them. In my opinion they are not a coyote trap.

Unless you have situations where you can REALLY guide a coyotes foot into a perfect position on the trap pan, you will get a lot of misses and toe catches using small traps. Using a larger trap will give you a better margin of error for coyotes.

If I HAD to use a 1 1/2 I would look at Montgomey or Sleepy Creeks as traps that may take the beating the best! Also the MB 450 as its one of the better made traps on the market! IMO

I caught my 1st bobcat in a 1 1/2 coil but I don't set them for bobcats as its to small and there are better choices! There is a reason the 1 1/2 is NOT listed as a coyote trap when you go to look at whats the recommended size is for coyote.

A 1.5 trap will hold coyotes but if you are going after yotes i would suggest another trap because your traps wont be lasting long because they are built lighter.....So stay with a #2 or bigger sized trap

Young man take the advise some have given you go with the bigger trap.
The coyote will fight hard against that 1.5 and probably damage the trap making it unusable.

I run #3 Bridger full modi. and the only problem is the dogs sometimes get bent, just hate to see what a stock[cheap]trap would look like after 1 season after useing it on yotes-invest in a good trap and get some shock springs/crunch proof swivels

A 1.75 offset is a good choice for fox/yote thats why that trap came about way back when the yotes made the big push East! I catch many fox in the MJ600s and have little to no foot damage on them with the wider O/S jaws! IMO

.....So stay with a #2 or bigger sized trap I and quite few other folks are pretty fond of the MB 550's for coyotes, very strong well built trap.

The MB550, what size is this trap? It is a 1 1/2, right? Inside spread is 4 3/4" outside is 5 1/2" a bridger 1 1/2 is 4 3/4 " inside and 5 1/8" outside. These measurements are off MTP website....So, Mark June says the 550 is a great coyote, and it is a 1 1/2 sized trap, so a 1 1/2 IS a good coyote trap! There you have it, clear as MUD! you are welcome

cattrap, sorry, MTP must have the measurements wrong on their web site, maybe you should tell them.
I am fighting with myself right now about gettting 550s and getting rid of my 1.75 Sleepies, but the sleepies are wider, what to do, what to do!

MTP's measurements are right. The mb is slightly smaller in jawspread than most #2s, it would be more in line with most 1.75s in the market.

I wish I could run the MB 650-C , but law won't let me. Only a 5 3/4 inch jaw opening allowed down here. Looks like the MB 550 os will be replacing some of the cheap 1 3/4 traps in the shed.
