i have been contemplating on how to acquire my stakes for my foot hold traps and i think i got it. i was thinking of using rebar and then i realized i dont have access to a welder and i dont feeli like being charged for someone to weld the rebar for me, and then i thought i will just buy them but then i though about the price of buying them along with the cost of shipping. well needless to say i was at the hardware store buying materials to finish my bathroom and i was in the hardware section so i though i would snoop around and see if they had anything i could make a stake out of. i walked a couple of aisles over and saw a 1/2in x 3ft allthread rod and knew thats what im going to use. so i grab that and walk over to the nuts and bolts section and find a locking nut (the kind that looks like it has a washer on it) and headed to check out. then when i got home i proceeded to make my stake, and here is how i did it... pretty self explanatory but ill share anyways 12"-13-3ft Allthread rod $3.67 1/2-13 serrated lock nut course $1.50 took the all thread rod and put the nut on one end down about 3 inches then i whacked the thread with a hammer a couple of times to mar the threads and then backed the nut up till it got snug in the marred threads take a big washer (found one in my garage and had to drill it out and my bit was horrible) then on the opposite end of the nut slip the washer on the rod and bring it up to the nut do the same thing with the end of your trap chain like you did with the washer and your set

Not to me he couldn't. All thread is to expensive for a cheap skate like me.
I still use te same kind of stakes my grandpa did. I use kiln dried hard wood. I drill a hole 1/4 to 1/2 way down from the top, put a piece of cable snare through the hole, add a fender washer and hammer a nut or a snare stop.
I cut the cable and make a loop large enough that I can attach the trap so the bottom of the loop is even with the top of the stake.
I drive the stake until the top is even with or below the ground. When the kiln dried wood gets wet it swells, and since the cable is attached below the surface the stake acts like an earth anchor, it would hold an elephant! Well, a really small elephant.
These are lighter and cheaper than rebar and take less time and equipment to make, and I have never had a critter pull one. The cable above the ground acts like another swivel, no kinks, no breaks.

One could drive a nut on some rebar also.... Dont know who would "slam" the man. We do what we have to in order to get the desired end results.......

Same here CDR I have hammered nuts on rebar and to this day they are still operable. Marc I admire your drive to make it work and your idea will no doubt work and serve it's job.. you will find working with rerod is WAY cheaper though.. Good post Marc

marc knows were i came with that post. i have used them both ways. as hawkeye and forrest said its very costly that way but it's not like he's making dz's. marc you have some thing most people don't have . the art of not giving up and a hunger to learn with these two things you could goe a long ways with this.

thanks Bill, the stake i have made was an on the fly quick decision and chose to use those materials and took less than 5 minutes to make. when i am ready to run dozens of sets then i will look into other stakes that i can get in sets of a dozen. when i went and checked my set this morning the tracks have gotten closer and i also have found a couple of areas i can set another 10 sets along with half a dozen snares. our snare laws are the loop cant be any bigger than a 15inch diameter

Hey Mark, thats a great idea for only a few stakes. If you ever come by greencastle, indiana give me a yell and and bring ya some rebar and ill weld ya some for free. If you dont have a place to buy rebar theres a place that sells it cheap here.

WTG on the stakes. Always thinking that's the way to do it you could be the one who comes up with next new type of set.

Way to use your head Marc. With that kind of initiative, you're sure to do good at this game.

i just need to get more traps and then we may be able to set something up Well, there's no doubt your pretty creative, so maybe you should think about making some snares and set ups. There's lot's of good snare information on line. If snares are legal in your state.

yea snares are legal here but they have to be 15" around unless it has a relax lock then the loop can be as big as i want

You shouldnt need a loop bigger than 15 for anything in Indiana, I dont go over 12-13 inches.

in circumference or or across?

Across my max is 12-13 but the majority is 10 inches across and 9-10 inches up from the bottom of the loop. With that in Indiana you have to use relaxing locks but just find a place with entanglement and your good to go.
