I was welding some t-stakes today and as always I tested them. I'm not the best welder and would rather have a failure in my yard then on the line. This time my welds held but the rebar shattered beneath the weld. This is smaller rebar than I'm used to welding. My best guess is that dunking it in water made it brittle. Any one else ever have this happen?

Never had it happen but I bet your right. Weld up some more and just let them air cool and try them. Let us know how it works.

Well I rewelded them this morning and slow cooling seems to have worked. The only two failures were from my weld job. Some day I'll figure out how to make a decent weld with wire.

rebar can be a lityle tricky. just grind a bit of the scale off wherr your welding and maybe preheat then weld. I never had any crack (yet) but I been welding 30 + years. good luck, keep welding and have fun

Exactly what timdandy said, prep it then air cool it. Cooling it down to fast, like with a water bath, will make it brittle.
