Have a guy looking for black tail prairie dogs for a study skin collection he is working on. Have gone out and shot several but the .22 is to small and the .17HMR makes a mess out of them. Picked up some FMJ .17HMR and they work better then the .22 did. Buddy said he had some traps "basically a small colony trap" that fits in the hole opening. We set out 27 traps today will see what we get by the weekend he said it takes a few days for them to start coming out. Click to enlarge photo

The guy wants the whole dogs D he does a lot of listing of the organs and saves the skulls! Them little guys are flea bags with living in the ground. Brought one home I shot with the 17 HMR and they were jumping like popcorn in the shed! LOL

With the 17hmr don't use the ballistic tips. Winchester hollowpoints are a fairily stable bullet. Although not as accurate in my gun
Also shoot them farther out. Gives the bullet a chance to slow down. Speed pops the target

Tried the ballistic tips and the TNT HP but the FMJ were clean through and through even up close, a guy just needs to hit the T to drop them clean!

Use a non frag bullet. Those with ballistic tips tend to frag. Low ricochet probability but will frag. Unless velocity is low enough

If you kill them the others will eat them in the bigger towns so live trapping keeps them intact. Can't leave them overnight because the fox/yotes will carry the traps away! LOL I have to check them at sunset for the best results. He traps them and wants them alive he said they won't last over night if it gets down in the 40s or 50s.

I think they can come out in colder weather if it's sunny but the long night is too much for them for too long. Had a camel mess with me tonight sucker chased me for a few 100 yards trying to kick the truck until me gave up~`

Jerry those camels spit on you if they get the chance. They have them in a private zoo I trap in. I try to stay as far away from them as I can.
