Over valentines weekend, cause I wont have any school, Me and my buddy are gonna do a little survival practice, he has a ton of snowshoe hares around his place, so the food part should be easy, Note the "should" lol. because this is our first trip with out the regular camping stuff (like food lol) we will both use a sleeping bag, but other than that, we are only going to use what we have in our survival kits and what we keep on our person on a regular basis (like a leatherman). I'll let you know how it goes. It should be fun! we have done a few of these outings in the summer but never in winter.

Fur I strongly, strongly say make a snow cave! Also use snares for the rabbits as snare are still working while you are sleeping, why snares not traps, not much chance of connecting with a critter you dont want. A marten and of fisher should distroy a rabbit snare quick and easy, without doing harm to either. Remember dont work up a sweat.

Fur,
I've done quite a bit of winter camping ...when someone comes with me I only Require 2 things... 1 is The best Sleeping bag you can find ... Doubled... One inside the other creates Air space inside the bag you sleep in you can also safety pin in a fleece blanket. The other thing is a ground pad. Do not dig down to the ground, use the snow as an insulating layer... I build a tight lean-to ... takes some time so start early, but its really fun...
*** Big Tip. sleep in ONE layer, preferably a long underwear layer, roll up your Outer layer inside the bag along the zipper.. your body will aclimate to the surrounding temp with what you are wearing... so when you get up, you will have warm clothes to put on... Do not sleep in your Clothes or you will freeze.

Thanks guys! I on;y use snares for rabbits, I keep 30 feet of snare wire in my survival kit. We were gonna build a snowcave/lean-to thing and put spruce bought on the snow.
330, I didn't know about not sleeping with your outer cloths on, I always have, but I'll try not wearing them. we will prolly have an open end on our lean to and build a fire to heat it up a little, not to mention, since this if our first time, we will do it when its fairily warm (not getting below 10 at night)
in my survival kit I have, construction twine lighter matches flint rice 30 feet of snare wire fire starters charcoal hand and body warmers a small tool kit black garbage bag and an extra ziplock tinfoil fishing kit sewingkit
I keep it in a tin coffee can

Add Choclate, and peanuts or something like Pearson's Nut rolls. toothpaste mint flavored also, small tub of it. Find orange garbage backs if you can( can be used as a signal flag alot easier then a black bag). And A first aid kit!

Make that black garbage bag a 55 gallon orange one. Its also handy to have a first aid kit. Add some other food to the kit that will give you some energy like candy. Do you have a small knife sharpener? Cause that can be real handy. Wish you the best of luck.

To make a great bed to sleep on, Dig a hole 1 ft deep and 6 ft long. Make a fire, take the coals and tender out of the fire, put them in the hole, spread about 6 in of dirt on top of the coals and then lay your sleeping bag, blanket or pine needles on top. after you lie down if its still too hot, add more dirt. Makes a great warm bed to sleep on even in the snow.

Before you get into your bag, DO NOT tell your buddy happy Valentine's day. That's a sure way of not making it through the night.
