I know it is not a survival situation but.
Dry Ice!! Buy a pound or 2 depending on how long you will be camping. Place the dry ice in a stryofoam cooler with a lid. When you are at the camp site place the coller of dry ice about 15 feet from your tent/rv/camper and away from the cooking/eating area. Take the top of the cooler and the dry ice as is melts will draw the skeeter to it instead of to you. Cover the ice and place in the shade whenever you are not in the camp site. This wont take care of all the bugs but it will deminish the amout that you will be swatting.

Couldnt you put some dry ungulate dung on the fire to get rid of them?
