My dad and all my uncles and my grandpa B. gathered at my uncles place opening day of deer season. After the morning stand and then making deer drives it was decided by everybody but us kids, we didn’t know much and the first couple years of deer hunting is really ment to teach the next generation the art of deer hunting.
Everybody got set up to make a drive on the south side of the power line. I would be walking closest to the power line. Being young and kind of stupid about the whole deer hunting thing I didn’t realize that this was going to be a rather long push. I was told to walk about 25 yards in the woods but to make sure that I could see the power line. Off we went to make the push.
It seemed like I had been walking forever when I came to a year old clear-cut and I could see my grandpa sitting on a log pile. Thinking the push was done I walked over to my grandpa and sat down next to him. I tried to talk with grandpa about the coming summers fishing we would do. Grandpa didn’t say a word just put his finger to his mouth for me to be quiet, and you always did as grandpa said.
We sat there for a little and grandpa whispered here come a buck. I looked where he was looking but could not see anything but popple whips and said that i didn’t see it. Grandpa looked at me and said" I don’t either but I smell him". I just grinned and giggled. Then before my eyes it’s a BUCK running h*all bent for leather!! I raised the Winchester 30-30 i was carrying; I could see grandpa raise his .257 also. Grandpa didn’t pull the trigger so I did 3 times and the deer was across the power line and into the next bit of trees.
I looked at grandpa almost crying and said “I missed, I missed it grandpa!". Grandpa looked at me and said that I hit it with every bullet and that it was down in the woods just off the power line. The first person to show up was my Uncle Joe and said here it is. Just like grandpa said. It was a nice little 8 pointer!
I don’t care how many or how big another deer is that I might get to bag. This was my grandpa's last year to deer hunt and my first. To sit next to this GREAT MAN and to have him just watch through his scope while I banged away with the lever action.
It brings tears to my eyes to tell this story anytime I tell it. I never knew a man could love another man so much.
