Here she be, my current money pit. She was a Warden's sled in New Hampshire for a while. They obviously ain't too easy on the equipment...... So, me being me, and never contented with things the way they are, I'm rebuilding her this summer. Here she was after the one and only ride I took her on. For those of you that don't know, she's got high and low range and reverse. Woo Hoo! Reverse, what an invention! 20" wide track and a rotax 503. Tearing her down. Had my daughter's help. Lots of welding! Rebuilt the rear cargo rack too. Bigger, better, stronger. I coated it with herculiner truck bed liner. Lil Miss is painting her Hannah Montana scooter black. It makes it faster! I have found that almost everything about this sled is impossible to find. So I had to make most everything that needed replacing. Skid pans, tie rods, ect. I'm a little further along then this and will take a few more pictures as the fiasco goes on! It WILL be an all summer affair. But it sure does help me avoid the wood pile!

The track is 156", it has the articulating rear end for help in reverse. This will be my beater sled. I have already decided I will beat the snot out of her trapping and cat hunting. This is how she sits tonight. A few odds and ends bolted up. Lots of work with little to show for it I'm afraid. I have stuff painted and drying hung all over the dang shop, but it won't be bolted up for a looong time! Mark I told you stuff has exploded all over my shop. Hard to find a spot to set down a cold beer! Busy hands can also be the Devil's workshop!

I know nothing about sleds, but I have rebuilt a lot of stuff in my lifetime. Looks like you are doing it right. Take it all the way down and build back in new or better conditions. Congrats. I hope you enjoy your first ride on it and every ride after that. Good Job

Okay Ewok, here's the update. Got the handlebars and dash stuff on. Took all the wiring apart and resoldiered and heatshrinked all splices. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to work on stuff. The trunk/ underseat storage is back on with the locks. Battery is in and strapped down......... Hmmm, not much else! Gotta see if I can shake ma down for some grant money! You can see the gearbox in the background on my welding table, ain't she pretty?

Oh man do I have a lot of work ahead of me! I should just crush this thing and cut my losses..... But, not being of sane mind, I won't. Got some overtime and figured I better get this torn down motor off of my work bench. New seals, bearings and pistons, gasket set too. Cut .020 off the heads. More Power!!! Coming together now. Bead blasted the whole shootin' match. I won't paint the engine where it is air cooled. Finally got the front suspension cleaned up and the ol slug back on the ground. Here's a couple parting shots for now. The purse is once again empty......

I can only see one problem with it . It should be an arctic cat !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met up with a guy beaver trapping in NY with an Elan. This guy says he buys them all.Best trapping sled going. He removed the seat, and just put a flotation boat seat up front for a kneeling pad and had it fitted with a good size box on the back.He said it was very easy to get it unstuck in deep snow since it was so light.

Mark this sled WILL be beat and broken more then once this winter, I promise! Milkie we will see how she does against the Cat's this fall! A buddy of mine just scored a 2002 Bear Cat 660 turbo four stroke rig with a 20" x 156" track. He has a bump on his head and on a dare will go everywhere he shouldn't! Kind of a "hold my beer, watch this!" sorta fella.... My son has an Artic Cat, but she ain't much in the powder. Here's the grass drags from last weekend! Ha Ha! Can't let that gas get stale ya know! Heck I've been sporting a 92 Yahmaha Ovation I got for free for the last 3 years, an old Elan would have been a major upgrade.

I noticed the mill too. I also noticed a crescent wrench with a tapered handle for aligning bolt holes. Are you a Machinist or an Iron worker, or both? David

Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah that's my old J-head mill. Like most things around here she was saved from the junk yard for pennies and restored. I replaced the 3 phase pancake motor while I was at it and put on a DC motor. I can dial the speed all the way down to 10 rpm for tapping holes with just the turn of a knob! She's not perfect, but I ain't a Real Machinist either. Or a Real Iron Worker! I build elevators and pointy wrenches come in awfull handy. They also work well when threatening co-workers.
