Been working since I was 11 years old, semi retired now. The rule of thumb I have always used is....Give a man a days work for a days pay. Just got a phone call from a person that wants me to quit my current part time job and come to work for them....Something to add to your list. Tom

I finally went to school to be a machinist. Good trade. There is a shortage of machinhists now. There is alot of good advice given here. I have one thing to add. Pick a career and be good at it. You will never have to worry about a job. Employers will be knocking at your door.

In settled country and with available transportation, the sky is the limit. Do a good job of marketing yourself and keep your reputation excellent, you'll always be in demand. What about the kid in the country with no transportation? Start grubbing. Dig yellow root, blood root, and 'seng while in season. Still, you can cut canes, roll grapevine, or perhaps fish. Find a market and advertise. This internet is a big market, use your head, your imagination, and above all work hard. The harder you work the more you'll make.

Thats cool! I never have operated a john deer 440 c but i hear there a nice little machine! And it sure is not easy work!! sometimes you have a day thats actually kind of fun then the next day everything goes wrong! but it sure helps allot if the cutter throws the trees in the right direction! its allways a pain grabbing them by the small end! and During the winter we have off allot since you cant work if its muddy! so thats when i take advantage and go hunt trap or fish! Today while i was working i had 2 little fawns come up within 10 yrds of the skidder they didnt run away .. untill they saw there was a humane in it

Ray12 yeah i have found 3 fawns in the woods by us in the last couple weeks i took a few pics of them they most have been just dropped the one could barely stand up yet... but yeah the winter is our best months for logging here we work down south of us on the Menominee Reservation and let me tell ya there is some nice timber down there we work up here for R&R Connors during spring summer and early fall which i like cuz its close to home and i can usually set out 2 dozen land sets and bout 2 dozen rat traps... it aint alot but when your working a guy dont have alot of time to trap this year tho i plan on setting alot more land sets.. im hoping to catch 25 coon, 25 fox and coyote, any fisher if i get tags, hopefully a bobcat if i get a tag this is my 7th year applying for one, and im hoping 100 rats... maybe a few mink, and this spring maybe beaver.

Kids, HARD WORK DOES NOT GO UNNOTICED. When I was in grade school, I worked for the produce farmer behind my house. When not doing that I worked with my dad. When I got to high school, I worked midnights at a copper foundry from 11:00pm to 7:00 am then went to school from 8:00 to 3:30. I have been at my current job for 14 years, I am now a captain on a towboat. The pay is good, and work 30 days on and 30 days off. Whatever you do, take PRIDE in doing the best you can.

You can work hard for 4 years or work harder for the next 40+ years. My buddies kid dropped out and now just complains about what he makes for busting his butt roofing in the hot, hot summer. Kid can't keep a job as its always "party time" and that hurts his work/job efforts. He has been arrested 2X and hangs out with every loser in town and has NO clue what he has given up just to have it today!! Truth is he is 20years old and has NOTHING more then he did at 16, maybe even less!!
