went out to check my sets and my duke2 has been fired and there was nothing and what ever it was did not do any digging and but i cleaned out my bait... again. also i had a cage set out in a residential neighborhood because there is a coon that is running around in the day and too had fired and the bait cleaned out and no animal in it. guess i just need to keep at it. just getting frustrating but i guess its all part of the game

keep at em, you'll make them pay....last winter I had 2 fox flip my traps, never did catch them....didn't catch anything that season except a coyote that got out.

Marc I don't know how cold it got in your area last night but one possibility is a animal tripped your pan and your jaws were froze to the ground. As soon as the sun comes up and temps rise "Click" the trap fires. This scenario is common and many think they are missing animals when they are actually having freeze issues...

It's happened to me before also. You will become better from experiencing this Marc!

i know my jaws werent frozen to the ground because my trap was actually moved. the pic isnt of the set right now but the location of the trap is in the same spot here its covered by dirt but and in my updated set the hole is deeper, the sticks infront of the hole are gone and the trap is covered by leaves. the red X is where the the trap was when set and the red O is where the trap was when i went and check it and it was fired

well it could have been a toe catch and they poped right out of the trap heres my gueses 1. toe catch 2. deer steped on it ( then something else ate the bait
i had allot of miss fires and found out it was pan tension also and ill try to get ya some pics of it but positioning the trap. some times the trap will just push the foot up thats why if im trapping a dirt hole with the approach to from the east i set the jaws north and south rather then east and west. i found that to help get better foot catches

ok marc i dont know if this will help or not but this is the way i find the best to get good foot catches with proper pan tension i took your pic there and added you see the best way to the left and to me the bad way to the right when steping on the trap the jaws are clear of the foot and will resault in a solid catch the left the bottum jaw could push the foot up resaulting in a miss fire or toe catch

my approach is is from the north and i got my trap set so the dog is towards the hole.

my approach is is from the north and i got my trap set so the dog is towards the hole. in that case you jaw could be pushing the foot up try turning it to the way i show in the pic ( the left example) and see if that helps

i bet i know what happen marc was that the tainted eggs if you get any on the ground rather the lower lip or any were at ground level the canine will roll and when he rolled you caught the guard hairs and thats why the trap was moved..also if you used salt a deer step in it and jumped and the trap landed were it was.if it happens again move the trap 20 ft from that set..look close in the jaws for long hair this tells you the canine rolled if no hair a deer stepped in it

Here in Arkansas we get a lot of rain and have to deal with the mud, go get you some store bough peat moss bead your trap place some wax paper over your trap and sift with peat moss, the moss is light and won't fill in around your pan like the mud and trap will trip better. Not been trapping long but this works for me in muddy conditions.

all animals. i have had a miss fire sence then either How many fox and coyotes would you say you missed before turning your traps and how many caught since turning them? On longer legged animals, I have the dog facing the hole. I use suttle guiding to try and get the animal to step on the pan and don't worry to much on the stepping between the jaws on land sets. Water sets on the other hand and blind sets I try to get the animal to step between the jaws. Just my preference. I'm not saying one way is better or worse.
