Is there a difference in the way they're used? If not, is one better than the other? I'm completely new to the whole idea of using a sent post set and I've been hearing about using sfe. Then I read a little bout fermenting eggs. Are they used the same way?

I hope Lawdog gets on here to answer this. He knows more than I do but;
The original SFE was just that synthetic. Had some corrosive stuff in it. I recall a lure maker charging $1.00 a drop to add it to his lures. The new SFE is not the same stuff. I use some fermented egg base but I think Lawdog used a bunch of it.

Yep the old SFE was a long and drawn out formula and is expensive to make today and like Ohio said it was very corrosive it would eat the caps off of the bottle over time. See if you can locate the research that was done by the University of CO back in the 70's on it the Government was involved also. The stuff today is not the same! Making your own fermented egg is tricky also and making it on 2 different days can yield 2 different results, temp and humidity both will have an affect on the final outcome.

Is fse and fermented eggs used at the same kind of sets or does it have two completely different uses?

If I had to classify SFE it as lure ingredient/lure and fermented eggs more of a bait or bait base.

SFE can be used as a long distance call lure, by itself. As such, I don't believe it is any better than other LDCs. Strait skunk essence works just as well.

The studies showed a higher catch percentage of I believe it was males and if I remember right it induced the male to pee making it a urine post type lure.
