I have a pond in my back yard and what do I see a few days ago but a muskrat. His feedbed is smack dab in the middle of the pond. I want to kill this thing before it burrows under my yard. I put out a muskrat float but he's not paying any attention to that. Any ideas?

Scottrainbolt, it is illegal to shoot a muskrat in this state. i don't agree with it, and think we should be able to shoot them. On a side note, i think if happersilderness would contact his local CO, they would be more than willing to give him the go ahead to shoot it. the quickest/easiest method is just like scottrainbolt mentioned. Good luck and let us know how you succeed!

happersilderness walk around the pond and look for other feedbeds or channels coming up to the bank and put a foothold on the feedbed if by shore or put a110 coni in the channel. More info would help out also is there cattail along the bank. is he using a bank den if the water is clear you should be able to tell the water will be dirty where he is going in and out of his bank den!

I wouldn't shoot it, not that I am against it, I'd try various sets and baits and catch it. Use it as a learning experience and have fun with it.

I do not think that there is any thing wrong with shooting a muskrat but if there is a law that tells us not to then obey the law nobody would prob. ever find out about it but if some one did it could give us trappers a bad name...So I say obey the law!!

As stated above, "It is illegal to shoot muskrats in that state period". Whether anyone would find out about it or not, which you would have no way of knowing if anyone would find out about it. Would it be worth the fine or loss of hunting and trapping privaledges over a shot muskrat.
Ethics and morals come into play with almost everything a person does or says in day to day living. How do you want to be known as?
Get some traps and go catch it.

If you find proof that said Muskrat is causing damage to your property.
1. Look for and find damage to property, look are and look close, when found follow step 2.
2. Call you local C.O. In our state Happer, and let the C.O. know about damage caused by rats or beaver most wardens advise removing the animal. 9 out of 10 time if the problem causing beaver is in a rural area the C.O. tells the land owner to handle the situation. I mean no offence by saying this Happer, it would be best if you mom or dad called the C.0.

I would think your post minnesotascott would probably work best. All I'm trying to say is that if you pull the trigger on a 22 once and anyone hears for all they know you we're shooting at a skunk or something.

The reason it has been said not to shoot the offending muskrat is the law. I understand what you are saying furtrapper, but I am pretty sure no one here really wants to condone breaking the law or giving advice to break the law.

first off watch what you type as it can and will be used against you some day. i for one will never break any law and sure hope you don't.the key point here is when you break the law then now you become a poacher and that hurts every one including our sport of trapping.
hap do what mini said to do that was some good advise

I would recommend either blind sets if possible or using a muskrat-gland lure after checking your state's landowner nuisance regs.
