Looking for some input on which is the best way to clean up some traps... The traps i will be cleaning are old dyed many times and had a very thick rust coat before the dye. I have seen a post about a vinegar soak for 12 hrs 50/50 mix? I also have seen and read about doing a hardwood ash boil to clean the traps up? looking for opinions here all are welcome?

mark, i dont know how confident you are with electricity, but you can youtube videos and guys cleaning traps by putting traps in a bucket of water and running electricity into the water. its called electrolysis. i, myself, think that is a death waiting to happen but it does work prolly the best.
Personally i use the vinegar and water method. everyone seems to mix it to different concentrates... i go 1:2. 1 gallon WHITE vinegar to 2 gallons of water. let it set for a day or two. you will see am dirty foam foam top of the bucket. u can pull one out to check it. after the vinegar bath, you have to powerwash them real good. making sure you get all sides of the trap and in the coils. WARNING: rust stains EVERYTHING. clothes, shoes, cement. unless you rinse it off immediatly. i usually take them to the car wash for the power washing stage. once they are power washed you should have nice shiny clean traps. hang them out side till you have a light coat of rust. after that you can boil them, dip them, wax them, paint them. whatever you want to do. hope that helps ya out.

I have never used ash. But 50/50 vinegar and water works great. I never tried cutting it more than that but i will give it a try.

Vinegar works for me, didn't seem to take the wax off that great, but combined with pressure washer as soon as brought out of vinegar/water bath worked great look like brand new traps, not sure of ratio started out about 50/50 added some vinegar and some water along the way we have kept this going and have cleaned about 150 traps and several other tools and such
