Any of you guys ever use a GPS for marking your sets in new territory. I have used one for fishing but never trapping?

I trapped with Joey Vandyke in North Carolina last winter. He uses one and its pretty slick. They are a little over my head but i think they are a great tool.

Yes i use one for trapping. It is one of the best tools you will use on your line. I run a fairly long line, and with a gps, it helps keep accurate records. My spots are all numbered rather than a name. They corrispond with the number in my gps. I hit the enter button once and it gives me a number, then i hit it the second time and it saves it.

I sure will be next year! We had fisher sets halfway to Marks house and used flagging tape. Well tape got low and our flags got smaller and smaller. Snow downed some of the tree limbs. So we reflagged. Then some got taken by neighbors thinking the landowner was subdividing! Next year...........GPS! Everything looks vastly different when it snows or if you enter from the other end of the road.

You have a great method Cameron2!! Mine is a lot similar, only i save just the number in the gps, then refer to my log book for how many sets i have at that location.

What type and model are you using lyonch? Can you add maps for different areas (i.e. States, Canada, Alaska)? David

Dvarnish - I go through about one handheld about every other year (it fills with points or i wreck it somehow, usually i wreck it lol), so i get the cheaper ones. My handhelds that i have been using are magellans lately. It does not have all the maps on it that guys would like. I only want my handhelds to do two things. first is save points quickly and easily, second - show a line and track where i have driven. Once you run your line once, you will always be able to follow that same line on the handheld. The gps that i put in my truck, is a garmin 1365. I am pretty sure if i spent some time on the unit and punched in a bunch of way points, it woud give me the fastest route. I have not even attempted to get that complex yet. This GPS shows all of the states, and canada for roads. A decent set that i bought for my dad for a handheld GPS, are the Garmin Rhinos. They come in a pack of 2 and have 2 way radios and gps built in the same unit. We use this when we are out west. It shows where the other person is if you so choose to.

this year i am using an app on my android phone, it is called my tracks, it works really good, and you just insert a waypoint that you want to mark and you are done, save it and you can drive right to it

I use one when I'm scouting for muskrats, beaver and coon. I drive along and when I find a place that would be good to set I plot the coordinate and I name it according to the animal. For example if I find a beaver lodge I'll name it beaver1 I find another one I name it beaver2 and so on. If I find a place to set for 2 animals I'll just use the initials. For example MB1 (muskrat and beaver) or CM1 (coon and muskrat) etc. Then I'll use it for when I go out and set traps. And in a notebook I carry with I put down the name of the place (what its called in the GPS) and I put down what set, lure/bait, and trap I put out and how many. For example. Coon1, Black Label, 1.5 coil, pocket set. I do the same thing for all the things I'm going to trap... Or I'll plot a point when I find a culvert. In the winter I take a branch and I stick it in the snow next to the road so when I drive by I know to stop there. (I usually put 2 or 3 sticks in and I make sure they won't fall on the road)
