Anybody make a trapping log book any more, I plan to hit the yotes hard and would like to keep better records of the lures that are being used and the results! It always seem like I will keep track but thats all good until I re-lure a couple times then it all goes South. If not I will have to make one up.

Jerry i have almost 35 years of log books. My log data includes, Location i.e. road, set loaction, trap used, lure/bait used, weather (temp, rain, snow, sun), moon phase, type of set, and catch per set and trapping location.
They also include sightings, tracks, scat, food avability, half eaten food.
Miles driven per day, money spent on gas and GPS locations of stop points. I even make note if I talked to anybody.

Scott Thats asking a lot for a guy who won't stop to take a Pic when hes going!! I was thinking more of the basic stuff I have contol over! The weather/ temp is beyond my control so I want to focus on Set type/Lure used/Location/ Wind just because its a major factor for the lure to work! Just want to see what lure works the best without cross luring and losing track of whats doing the best job. Something I can look over at the end of the season and come to report that makes it clear!!!

Jerry, to me weather plays a big factor in trapping. That is why I keep track of it. It is alot in info I keep but I do learn or remember things by reading my old log books. I guess I an too anal!
My set info is always included.

I am wanting to log what lures/sets caught what animals along with the date to determine moon phases. I have not seen this type of product but haven't looked much yet, but I am thinking the easiest way to keep track of lures would be to have a small plastic tag that is attached with a zip strip, you could tie it off to a limb or some other object near your set and put the abbreviation of your lure used at the set on the tag. If it is written down in your book after making a catch or re-luring the set you will have to dig back through the book to look everything up, with the tag just go check it out...should save a little time.

i have tried to keep logs over a few years but it seems they get wet or so mudded up that they are a waste of timefor me....since i run my line mostly on a 4 wheeler the log really get abused. it also takes a alot of time out of my day..you figure 2 mins per log entry and by the end of the day that takes out alot of time i need to run my line in my alloted amount of time i have to do so...generally i run in the area of 100-120 sets per day..so 2 mins per entry thats a couple hours of valuable time that i need to concentrate on my line....log books just arent for me as a hole..i do keep some notes on new lures i try but thats just a minute scratch in a little note book....i do however (when in the trapping mode) have a good mind of what lure was used where and at what set.
and i just dont take the time most times to set down after 8+ hrours of line running plus the 3-4 hours of skinning to fill in the blanks...
this year my girlfriend went everyday with me and she kept my notes for me...and at the end of the year i jotted down on a piece of paper what lures i thought worked best and what areas or farms produced more animals (keep in mind i never looked at her note book) and my thought was proved by the notes she kept for the 5-6 weeks we trapped...

scott thats the one i have also
here is a dialog of how i do mine
1st stop/coon/3 sets/lures foxpro cherry,1,dp coon special2,fishy3 /45 degrees 2 coon /large boar set 1 and 1 sow set 3
2nd stop / sets 2 coon,1 cat 1 fox/southern rub,dpcoon,,/32 degrees /2 coon set 1-2 ,2 fox in rub post 3- 4
how many do you use the 10 day weather charts i do and there is a reason why. right before a major front comes threw the animals will move extra hard ,the day before and the day after.by looking at the charts will let me know when i should get ready .lets say i set traps on monday and they are calling for a storm here that will produce heavy rains at times on wed so i know to add a little extra waxed dirt to keep my sets working .just like snow i would know to add a little extra antifreeze to the sets.just like when the temps hits 40 degrees and drops over night in to the teens ,with out the weather charts a lot of my sets are at risk and were i feed my family on fur catches the last thing i need is a few days lay off or have a extra work load .so what i am only running 2-3 dz traps but try fixing 200-300 sets .you can't set 200-300 sets a day and you sure can't redo that many eather in a day.each stop takes time and that time adds up so that cost you fur and you lose money.whats that got to do with log books every thing.
let me also point this out weather and temps has every thing to do with your catches ,sets ,lure, and bait because it's these that teaches you how good you are and how good the lure is. for you coon guys up north when the temps hits the teens for several days the coon will hold up till it eather drops a few degrees or rises ,with keeping a eye on the weather you know first hand what to exspect and plan your lines to be more profitable .say the coon holes up for a week you can set close to a den or set a few canine sets out and by doing this gives you a chance for a profit..

i want to touch one more thing on this about weather charts .lets say you are having a mild fall day and you use a small dose of lure and the temps drops for a week in the teens or single digits? the lure want travel as far due to the air currents but with the charts you know to eather add a ldc lure or add a little more lure to the set.now i prefer to add the ldc call because if i add extra lure and that weather chart is off i take a chance of over luring my sets and that can push the canines away
many of you know this but the beginners are still learning the ropes

My log book is a 3 ring binder packed with sheets that sit in the truck. When you have a trapping partner, keeping a log book is a lot easier. I usually have a rookie trapper or a friend with me when i am out checking and setting, so i have them write in the log book for me as we drive. These locations correspond to the numbers in my GPS. I have even went as far as physically jotting down the actual GPS coordinates so that if the GPS goes out i have them available to me. When i am on a new line and not familiar with the area roads, i punch the GPS coordinates into my Vehicle GPS and it takes me there the fastest route. Sometimes i find new places to set when i do this too.
When it comes to weather (this is mainly for coon) i have noticed big movements the day before a storm, the day of, and only some on the day after. The front does not have to be rain or snow, it can something as simple as a big temperature swing, a significant change in wind direction, or anything that isn't the norm. My log book has proven to me too, that the bigger the front, the more fur i see in my traps.

This is what i use for my land trapping journal. If anyone would like it, i have it in a word document and you can modify it to fit your needs if you choose to.
