Well just let me say first that, "I know a guy", who shot a porcupine this evening. Now if this fella wanted to skin this thing out what would be the best way to go about it? Cased? Open? How about tanning, would all the quills shake out on the carpet afterwards or would they "set" like when you salt a regular hide? I should just throw it in the stream so the dogs, and lawnmower, stay away from it..... I have had quills in my hands before and don't much care for it! But, for some stupid reason I feel the need to peel something.

Yeah I can picture a fail on the home tan also. I sold a cat to a taxidermist in Greenbush a couple years ago and he had a porky hide fresh off the carcass sitting out. I've seen mounts and such and think they are really nice. Be neat to have one in a willow hoop hanging up. This one was fairly small and not real pretty.

Skinned a few for my dogs a long time ago did them open and the dogs really liked the meat! Always got stuck a few times but it was a challange!

1 oz of 6" or longer guard quills pays 20 bucks or more!

I think ours are different then the southern quill pigs. You'd do well to find a 6" hair on this guy. I'll check a little closer shortly.

That's a really interesting link, Redeagle. Thanks! My internet messes up when a storm rolls through (like right now) so I was only able to view a couple pages. I will scope it out some more when she blows clear.
I didn't find many guard hairs hitting the 6" mark so I took it swimming to keep it away from the dogs..... I'll check the next one I get, maybe it'll be bigger.
