In the past I have been a boil in a lye solution, rinse, then into a pot with logwood dye, then when dry dip in real hot trap wax.I confess a couple of years I skipped the hot wax dip.I can't say I noticed any difference in my catch.Wax helps to protect the trap if you are using a salt type antifreeze until the first catch wears off most of the wax. Why not just boil to get the initial oil/grease off and use the trap this way. Each fall just boil them and go trap. When it gets cold enough to have to use antifreeze in the dirt I usually have gone to snares. The trap for canines is going to be covered with dirt.Fur bearers around water the trap is usually submerged. I won't trap this fall as I need to move.I am going to try this the next season I trap unless I get talked out of it.

I dont do all mine the same, new traps dont take dye well anyhow, I got a pile of new 1 3/4 s (new last year) I just boild the oil off and went trapping, other new traps I boild then wax,t , I also got traps I boil, let rust then dye &wax. gotem extra black to dull gray and some are painted brown, and black, even some with white pans. I could go on an on but I wont. onethings for sure I like trap preperation as much as traping. I dont think you need to redo all your traps every year but why would,nt you

All my land traps get dyed-waxed every year .. after pulling a line and moving on to the next the traps that are the dye is wore down to metal shine or wax is just wore off bad they get hit with the pressure washer -some get redyed or just waxed .. I really try to keep enough traps running and back-ups for mudballs-shiny or heaven forbid a skunky one [they draw diggers -IMO-]--Be nice now , no 2 trappers trap the same -use the same baits-lures-sets we be trappers thank the Gods-D-

I save my dye from last year and put all my traps through the old mix the next year, this gets a base dye on the rusty ones and cleans them up a bit, it gets the wax off of the rest of them, any new traps go in last.
I let them sit out for a few days to a week and see where they start to show any signs of rust spots. Once everything is boiled clean the old dye is poured out the barrel is rinsed out and the steps are repeated with clean dye and the are waxed at the same time. Then they sit overnight and are put in containers until season.
My thought on when to dye is a few weeks before the season as doing it too early invites bad smells the longer they sit around in the shed!

I dye and wax my land traps, snow and cold does not slow my trapping down, add snares into the mix and pile up the fur.
