How do you know when to set traps. Is there a certain temp to go by, or weather etc. to get the prime coat.

Most set by the legal season. Most states its a little early in my opinion.

What I mean is not the season for trapping, but when the fur would have the most value $. I don't think I have seen a road kill yet that does.

it seems like there is about a 4 week window when thd fur is at it grade A prime and only mother nature knows when that is. my first 2coons this year were good and only good, but #3 had some blue to it. 60 miles south of me inthe mountains thers all good fur. your west ny. fur should be looking better every day. hope this helps!

Trapped think yer on the mark when you said you haven't seen a road kill that looks good , bout what I always did before settin on coon ain't about a thing to open a coon along the side of the road for a quick check .. BUT I was told you can not pick up a road killed critter with the exception of a deer in Illinois .. just what I was told -- anybody up that way hear different?-D-

I trapped western New York many years ago. Back then their season came in real early like in October. I would think by the middle of November you should be ready to pile them up.
