Did an ADC job (free) to take out some raccoons that have created quite a latrine. This is a religious complex.
I set 4 DPs last night and get a call this morning that I had 3 in them. One older guy from up north mentioned he could bop them for me. I said sure since I wont be there till 3pm.
Well....him and a younger man went out there (dressed in suits) with a spade to try to bop them. 2 of the 3 pulled oit during the encounter (I can only imagine) and took 1.
The 2 that pulled out of the DPs....how educated do you think theyll be? I reset all traps and hoping for tight chains in the morning.

Well, you'll find out soon enough. If they avoid them, I'd set them in different locations with different bait and go from there. Do you have any cages?

Well just got 2 possums this morning.
I dont have good success with cages in town. Seems like very coon has already seen them.
Open to suggestions on bait. Currently using a marshmallow in trigger and filled with cat food. I used a paste of mashed fiah, corn meal and bacon grease to try to draw them in.

Wow, educated critters can be quite ornery and frustrating to deal with. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t go for the dog proofs again. I wouldn’t if I had been stuck in one and had some human in a suit come swinging a shovel at me!! 😂 You might get lucky though. I would start looking for blind set locations if I were in your situation. If you know where they are traveling, you can even create your own blind set locations to funnel them in using a little brush, wire, or plywood. Find pinch points to put in sets. I don’t know what your regulations are, but if you can use snares, they can work beautifully in situations like this where animals are educated.

That's the heck of it, tweed. If you could use foot holds, you'd obviously have a lot more options. I don't have any experience with DP's, so I can't help there, other than suggesting that you move them. Maybe bury them in a different location, in a dirt hole type set, or cover all but the hole? They may be shy of the location as well as the trap. Good luck with them.

Jelly will attract skunks and for some reason some cats. Just use peanut butter.

I ended up just using sardines in oil and cat food. Came back Sunday morning to full traps.
I pulled the traps and will let it set for a week so they don't get too used to them plus I wont have the time to check in the early AM.
A woman complained about dispatching on religious property. The men got it and explained that there's no difference in dispatching a mouse or a knat than dispatching a nuisance raccoon. I have no idea how she even found out unless she was walking around and noticed the traps in the back of the building.

Them church ladies don't miss much and any opportunity to complain some times. She forgot this maybe!
GOD GAVE MAN DOMINION OVER ANIMALS. Genesis 1:26-28. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Trapped in most places without any limits and there are always coon the next year been that way for ever.

I just receieved the text of an email that the woman sent. Such strong and unfortunately misguided emotions. I could easily prove each point wrong but I know better than to do such when emotions are involved.
The two that really bugged me are 1) theyre not doing any damage yet and no one has gotten sick and 2)why cant he use a humane trap so no one gets hurt.
Well 1) there has been no damage yet but its going that way and its not just a little poop...its full on heavily ised latrine that endangers the health of anyine that needs to work in the area. 2) Those DPs are completely humane, one of them was even sleeping when I came upon it. Using a cage trap and transporting and releasing it making it someone else's problem is illegal here unless you have permission of the private land owner. I bet that her landlord wouldnt be thrilled if they were releases onto their roof.
The leadership still trusts my judgement but boy...I sure dont want to cause any distruptions.

A 1 dimensional thinker will never get it and a emotional thinker doesn't want to get it they have the Bambi syndrome some simple facts, each animal is it's own worse enemy as they compete for the same resources and contract the same illnesses. Coon are prolific breeders and unlimited trapping does not hurt their population in fact it keeps them healthy!
Bunny huggers have their hearts in the right place but their heads in the wrong place just not much air up there for them! LOL

I replied this morning as tactfully and factually as I could.
Thank you for sharing. I understand that dealing with God’s creation in this imperfect world can be a very emotional topic for people. Politically motived Animal Rights organizations who attribute anthropomorphic qualities to God’s living creatures which makes its difficult for most to understand the reality of dealing with interaction between humans and animals.
Understandably there is concern about humane treatment of the caught animals. The type of trap used acts as a handcuff. Two of the raccoons were sleeping when I arrived if that tells you anything. Killing is never easy per say…I feel when a Christian has an interaction with a nuisance animal that they should do the up most to treat that animal with the respect it deserves whether it is relocation or dispatch. In Wisconsin it is illegal to relocate raccoons to state/public lands or private property unless there is written permission from the property owner and the property needs to have so many acres. The reason for this is based on biological science. Taking a nuisance and moving it someone so it can be someone else’s problem isn’t the nicest thing to do but more importantly raccoon (like most mammals) have territories. By introducing a new animal to a area, you are affectively introducing a new competitor which leads to battles between the interloper and the established animals and leads to the eventual slow death of one. Keeping that in mind I would feel that it would be the most humane and responsible thing to do is to remove the nuisance animal from the population. The device I use is called a Conibear or Body-Grip trap. This trap has been approved and the design funded by the American Humane Association.
I’ve also attached a flyer from the Centers for Disease Control outlining the very serious health concerns related to raccoon latrines and how it could lead to immobilizing or even deadly parasitic disease. This is definitely not just a case of “a little poo”. If you want I can send you scholarly articles about raccoon feces and its affects and dangers and various mammals including humans. This flyer would also be a good reference for the risk assessment that needs to be done (per Frank) for cleaning and sanitizing the area.
This email message caused me much distress also last night but thank you for sharing. As you mentioned Sunday evening a servant of God needs to be irreprehensible. I do not want to cause any division in the congregation which I could easily see happening over this emotional issue and I do not want to damage mine or my family’s reputation. As such after we complete the cleanup of the affective area, if we have problems again in the future perhaps it would be best for an outside 3rd party to address the problem. I can provide a list of a number of qualified local Animal Damage Control professionals if needed.

I never stress about doing the right thing just a waste of time never let them see you sweat you know what's right and what's best for the population just get it done. Put that same coon in that church ladies house she would change her tune in a heartbeat. Coons are never a problem when they are destroying other peoples property they have no dog in that fight easy to tell others what to do.

I agree with everything you said, LD. Every anti I've had the displeasure of talking to, has been long on emotion and short on facts. They don't want to hear the facts, either. I like to ask them if they eat meat, fish or fowl and if they wear any leather products. They don't like to hear that and I hope it at least gives them something to think about.
Good job on the coons, tweed.

Well I got a crew together to do the clean up Saturday. Removed the feces and soiled gravel. Steamed at 190 degrees the slab and the gravel area. There were others that were working when we came doing other chores.
All there were appreciative. But...squeaky wheel gets the grease.
