Hey water trappers, I’ve got a question for y’all. I’m primarily a land trapper, with some experience with mink and muskrats in PA. I only know what I’ve been told about beaver and otter. I now live and trap in central Georgia. Last night I was squirrel hunting by the edge of a swamp. I came across a channel of water maybe 4-6’ wide and 25 yards long that came off of the main waterway like a finger. At the end of it was an area of the bank about 3-4’ wide along the edge of the water where the grass was torn up. There was some mud and torn up grass just out of the water with some kind of gray substance on the pile of mud. My first thought was a beaver caster mound. I bent down to smell it, and I didn’t think it smelled like castor. It smelled very musky, a little fishy, and also like ammonia. Definitely not a sweet or vanilla smell. Also I investigated the area a little further and didn’t see any other fresh beaver sign, no cuttings or anything. I also wondered if it could be an otter toilet, but I don’t recall seeing bones or scales in the substance on the mud. We do also have gators in the area, I don’t know if they do anything like that or not. What do y’all think?
