There are several things that can cause this, bait odor on trap, foreign odor on trap,FRESH soil covering set and a young animal digging out of curiosity, plastic screening for pan cover or wind blown covering and animal wants to inspect,or an UN~SOLID TRAP BEDDED!
All these can be the culprit, but I think that a trap not bedded right might be cause for thinking a lot! If that trap tips and lifts up on the opposite side that animal steped on,he may want to investigate.
Can the animal smell steel,we maybe, but let me ask you this, have you ever seen a lot of metal dug up other than traps in your trapping area?
It used to be said that footprints caused animals to be wary? Well if that's the case the animals were are after would run themselves to death just from human tracks.
Filling up your truck with gas or diesel, right before setting traps,,yeah that's a BIG NO NO!
What is your ideas on this?Larry Gene

Some say I go to extremes to be sent free. every trap gets redyed and waxed before it goes back in the ground, wear hip boots and rubber gloves all the time, gloves even when dyeing traps. change gloves to bait. Someone helping me ,gathering sticks, dirt and handling tools they wear rubber gloves. I say all this to say I don't have digger troubles. I'm not a experienced trapper only my 3ed year, but I am a very serous deer hunter and I know what sent control is all about. 99% of my dig up can be put on dirty traps, one that just caught something the night before. Just my though on sent and diggers.

I honestly don't think human scent makes cannines dig. What do they think they're going to dig up ... humans?? At least not in the farm land that I trap. I have to lean towards foreign oders and trap bedding.

i would have to say i think most digging is caused by the trap not being bedded solid

chinook I agree human scent won't make them dig the only argument on that front is a thought human odor might spook them. I am not that worried about human odor but I don't like cigarette smoke, lure, and other loud foreign smells near my traps just for peace of mind.

If there's any blood around the set from a previous catch, I also try to remove it.

in this area they see and smell humans everyday. i think they learn to associate danger with human smell when you keep going upclose to the same spot (set) everyday.
