Fellows I just got thru looking at JC Connors traps,(Link Below),Yeah those are great looking traps and JC has the coyotes behind him, true,my question is there are a bunch of great traps made,I truly think better than offered when I was growing up!!!! I used the Montgomery Traps(aww what a sweetie)
Reason I say that is because we now have the KB line of traps that offer a trap that adds tension on jaws when animals pull harder,Hey I am impressed with that, but price is more!! It catches and holds and Mitchell's (Palo Duro post) shows the cats!!!!!
Well what if we use a trap less expensive, say my ole favorite Victor 1~1/2 modified underneath swivels and all modified? Ok well now there are better built traps for comfort right? What is more expensive, buying the higher doller trap and getting the Rols Royce or going less expensive and doing all the labor, plus buying all the parts or making them? Hey I wonder to if we are not cheating ourselves to at least try a couple each of the new ones to TEST them and get a look for our selves?
Question also becomes~If I had a trap right now I could sell you that was out of the box (Like the KB,or MB is) and you had less loses, wouldn't you and I be foolish for not having them?
How do we decide this,,please think this over to the limit before posting and rationalize this out?? Its crazy but makes your mind go to work right!! Please no quick answers,,think this out!! Larry Gene

Fast Reply:
I dont need to think about it! IF I had the money, I'd probably buy more MB550's (I do have a few). As far as modifying my Dukes, (they do work right out of the box) I like to build or tinker on things myself so its just something to do..... Could I save more by haveing the manufacturer do the mods, maybe; however, my time is cheap as I have nothing else to do! Now if you told me I'd lose less fur by purchasing some "high dollar" traps, I'd say prove it! You cant! So thats not a real viable question. No offence intended but I dont see that getting proven anytime soon---too many people make good catch numbers with Dukes! I am sure that some of the modern traps are better in some ways than the older styles; however, those old traps caught more fur than I'll ever see.......I think better trappers used them than modern trappers will use some of the new products (not trying to take away from you "high acheivers"...lol, always an exception to the rule). I'm sure your responces will vary with each trapper. just my two cents... Money is a huge factor in my trap purchases....wouldnt matter if you guarenteed better catch to loss ratio---if I cant afford the trap then I make do with what I can buy! Example: JC Conner Jake Trap--$35.00 and the Duke #1 3/4--$7.25!!! I could get 4 Dukes and still get a bottle of lure for same price! Thats 4 times the chance at getting a yote!

I have tried a wide array of traps new and old and in the end find myself really going towards bridger #2 and #3 for cats and yotes. I like duke 1.5 for coon and little grizz for a dp. As far as mods go IMHO on a 24 hour check they are over rated in importance. To be completely honest I remove the square factory center locator on a bridger and run my chain and swivels off the hole in the frame on one end. Then I night latch to level the pan and call it good. If you are selling to the live market extra mods and the like might be a good idea but if your fur trapper they could be skipped. This is just my opinion so take it for that not an argument. If you like doing mod work and think helps you then great but just so some people know it is not essential in everyone's eyes.

If money was no object AND I had private land, I would buy the elite fully modded traps available. Now here is the reality with me!!! LOL ........I do not have extra $$$$$, I trap PUBLIC land that has every Tom, Dick and Harry outdoor wannabe's that are out with thier DOGS!!! This is a recipe for missing traps and/or caught animals, so my decision is rather easy......DUKES and I have time to piddle with em. Good post Larrygene.

For me I believe it all obviously comes down to personal preference. Do you like working on and modifying traps? My time is worth something, my son plays baseball all summer and most of the fall and in the winter he has conditioning for the following summer baseball season 3 times a week. So, yes I could make some time to work on traps and I do when nothing else is pressing.
I own Jake Traps, CDR's, Bridgers, Victors, Dukes, MB's, Sleepy Creeks, Herters, Belisles and Sauvageaux. Out of these 11 different brands of traps there are 3 that in my opinion needed absolutely no adjustments or modifications whatsoever right out of the box and 2 others that really didn't need any either but I like a little adjustment on the dogs. These 5 traps are the most expensive out of the 11 brands. Now I don't own a lot of these 5 brands but, if I had the money the majority of my traps would be those 5.
I have heard the expression and maybe some of you all have too, "Quality never cost you money, it makes you money". I would bet good money that those 5 more expensive better crafted traps will outlast the others. I maybe wrong though.
CDR I mean no disrespect by this, so please don't take it that way you said, "Now if you told me I'd lose less fur by purchasing some "high dollar" traps, I'd say prove it! You cant! So thats not a real viable question.
I have to disagree with your statement though. I have caught and held muskrats and beavers by the tails by using the more expensive traps purely by accident that I am 99.9% sure the cheaper BG's would not have. Do to the jaws not closing completely.
All this being said, buy what makes you happy.

I use KB 5.5's and MB650's both are pretty much ready to go when you receive them. The hogs will pull out of the MB's and they wont pull out of the KB's. Both are fine traps and I choose quality over quanity.

Paloduro, We simply "agree" to disagree... lol I can not play in the world of "money is no object" as it is very much an object to me and my family. I do not envy you nor think less of you because you may use high dollar traps---glad your able to (also think that from some of your pics, I could learn from ya)! I did not take any disrespect from your statement---ever meet 2 trappers that agreed 100%? I haven't...lol I can not use BG's so I can not comment on them. My statement is just my opinion about the footholds I have used.

Great post. I've used the KB5.5 and MB's both good traps. Haven't tried any of the other Cadillac traps but I'm sure they would be just as good. As has been said I also like to tinker with trap mods so I go with the Duke #2 & Bridger 1.65. IMO with a little guiding you can make your target put his foot on the pan. Larry, if you were selling me Cadillac traps it would be the MB 750 right out of the box, they really work for beaver. Palo Duro that's a cool pic of that rooter, guess he rooted one to many times. LOL
