well, im wondering where you guys prefer your dog positioned at and why. some people like the dog at the 2:00 position others like it at the 12:00 others like it at the 3:00 or 9:00 position, for me, now this is with a dirthole set i feel i can control the dirt pattern and guide the animal better when i have one spring lever pointing towards the hole and the other pointing away from the hole. with a flat set or post set i like the dog to be in the 2:00 position. i guess what my question is, am i doing somthing wrong? and what does it really matter?

I set mine between 1 and 2 i do this because i prefer to keep the lever away for the stepping are of the yote or fox plus habit...LOL

ok on my urine post and rub post i want my dog at hug tight against the post and the dog facing the post..here is why.when a animal urinates or rubs on a object the always steps close to the object but why not set it at 1,2,3,or 4 because as they start to urineates they 9 times out of 10 adjust thier foot and during that time frame they step to the side.same with rubbing as the animal rubs it moves it's body back and forth during that process the foot is beside the post. think on this a canine as to work the sets from the side by my set i get the canine to walk threw by trap jaws with out the risk of it stepping on the jaws and getting tossed out when the trap fires

I keep mine at 3 and 9 so they step between the jaws on a dirthole. Same with water sets for beaver.

I usually set at 3 and 9 except at a scent post, then I usually set it with the loose jaw almost directly under the guide stick. I don't know why, though, just habit I guess.

Well I use mostly Montgomeries Step in traps so there is no dog at all but I will use between a 1 pm and 2 pm on the position of where the dog would be and a bare min of 9 inches back and 12 max on placement for coyotes,up tight to the dirt hole for fox, same on coon.Caught lots of fur that way.Larry Gene Pate

Mini, when I position a trap at a dirt hole set, I off set the trap either side by 3 inches. Now, when I off set to the left, I have my dog (I call it the strong jaw also) at 4-5 o'clock. When I off set to the right, I have the dog at 7- 8 o'clock. Why?, if you notice on most animals, the underside of its forearm is softer, a little muscle for cushion. The top of the forearm is bone, less cushion. I just like the stronger jaw hitting this cushion spot. It really is just a personal preference though. I have always felt the same as Bill on the animal stepping on a lever/jaw and flipping out. I have found that I cut way back on misses with better use of guide sticks and things. Remember, the finished set should have a noticeable depression where your pan is.
Rick.

I set my dog towards the attractor. On my trail or walk through sets I have the trap sideways in the trail so the dog can't be stepped on as easy. Anyway just the way I do and it works for me.

Your topic was "dog position". I dont care about the dogs postition as long as he has one foot in my trap...lol
Seriously, I offset the trap a bit at a dirthole and like the 2 and 3 oclock position (when on the right of a dirthole)......
