I just got thru learning a very valuable lesson,I lost a coyote due to a brand new cable stake cable breaking due to RUSTING,I now have all my cable stake cables from one end to the other painted!! I am even considering when I put my stakes together putting the cable thru a plastic small hoseand seal the ends, never saw cable rust like this and its regular soil.Larry Gene Pate

I use 1/8 7x7 on my stakes and have not had any issues. If rust is a problem for you Newt carry's stainless cable that will not rust.. One thing I see a lot of guys do that I do not think is necessary is boil there cable to remove the factory oils. By doing this the center of the cable become void of oils and is prone to rusting due to the moisture trapped in the strands that is why cable usually rots from the inside out. One option if you do not want to switch cable size or type is use formula one on all your stakes it holds up well drys fast... Good Luck...

good subject larry about trusting cable. i inspect my cable.now for the rust it must have been bad for it to break as i have used cable thats been in the ground for two years with out losing one animal due to breakage but each soil is different..the plastic will form drops of water and that will cause rusting as well.as a reminder always check any of your cable stakes because the cable can have a nick on it,or te furrel can be tapped to light and the cable come a part even on new ones.i had problems with both that i bought.now if you use stainless cable and yes it's high you cut back on the rusting and the breakage but not the sleeve problem.also use aluminum sleeves stead of steal nuts as they don't rust eather.now a lot of things can goe for the anchor head it self some will rust faster then others .regular berkshire disposables will snap in half if they rust or bend from being weak from rusting.
how do i fix all this ? use a pogo anchor
step one use a stainless washer
step 2 use a stainless cable
step 3 use a alumium or copper double sleves

I am getting ready to build some iowa earth anchors and I think I am just going to weld chain to them instead of using cable...be more expensive but it should last forever and through any animal...

I liked the berkshire disposables but the split rings I thought I'd try this season to attach them cost me 2 coyotes this season. I would NOT recommend them... Had one straightened out completely and the other I never did find..
