Mark I was thinking about mink boxes yesterday myself. Actually what to do with those 6 #21's I got, but we can only use 1 1/2's on floats. I was thinking the jump would help propel a mink or rat off of a float if set right.
I like that idea Mark looks real slick!

I had two out for a month this past season, along about a 1/3 mile of a small river. I also had six regular boxes on land along that same stretch.
I caught four mink in the land based boxes and none in the floaters.
I'm going to keep using them for another couple of years just to see if they ever work. What the heck, I'm checking the line anyway.

Have caught mink on some 1/2 sunk logs before so the idea should be solid but now I have little in the way of mink to trap here in SD, I try to avoid them until the numbers come up quite a ways!

they do work mark but there is a trick to using them .i played with them here in creeks, ponds ,lakes and water control rivers that the water was control by dams. the creeks produced fair ,the ponds and lakes did not produce at all and the water controled rivers produced good.it took me almost two years to see the pattern of the catches on the creek and the controled river and the pattern of no catches in lakes and ponds.
ok around here ponds and lakes have flat banks and no current but the creeks and rivers here has high banks and current.now the creeks only have fast current here in spots were the whole controled river has fast current here every were due to the power dams.you need both high banks and water current for them to produce well.the creeks has sand bars that the mink just floats to and to get on to rest so you have to get in the current away from the sand bars now the rivers high banks goes for miles and miles and as long as the dams was open and there was current the boxes worked BUT let them cut the water off and the boxes quit working and i beleaved it was because there was to many spots for them to rest on while working the water.i have seen the same results with regular rat floats on the creeks and rivers.with regular rat floats on creeks and rivers i caught both mink and rats were as the ponds and lakes i caught 99% rats again why no high banks and current.

So what you saying bill is the more current you have the better these box's work? Most of the plans for these box's would be rivers and pretty good size streams.I was also thinking of having the mouth of the box 1 to 2" out of water thinking maybe a little more appeal to them?

yes but you don't want to much current.if it's to fast it's hard to stablize the movement of the float.i prefer the long distance banks over the current but the current helps as they get tired fast and needs to rest they are still hunting the holes and that gets the cousity up and going.yes i agree i would have the hole at least two inches out of water.
the thing with banks is eather they will strick to hunt the bank or the water now once they enter the water and the banks are high for a few miles they have to rest due to the fact they can't climb out just any were.this works to your advantage.i used the same plans you posted.
