Good morning Folks, If you're looking to trap new areas, I've found it very helpful to contact your local County Government Center to acquire plate books which sometimes list the property owner's names on them. Some plat books don't show this information though. This info (like here in McHenry Co, IL) can be obtained through the Tax Accessor's office. They can give you the owner's name and the parcel number. This is where you have to do a small amount of home work. You take the parcel number and match it to the number in the plat book. and then you can see who the owners are. Once you have matched everything up, go knock on some doors, introduce yourself, and ask if you can trap their property.
I hope this tip will help you folks out in the coming seasons!

Good tip trapnhunt! Here is another tip for people looking for new land, make up a buisness card. I hand out a lot of these every season. In minnesota i find these very helpful for beaver trapping especially. I usually hand out 2-5 per landowner that i get permission from. I simply mention to them that if they have any friends or neighbors that would like to have anything trapped to give them a card and contact me at any time. this has gotten me a lot of properties over the past few years. heck i even handed one card out to a guy who only onwed 5 acres of land that told his neighbor about me and that turned into a 3,500 continous acres of new property to trap.

I find that most people don't realize the damage coons can do. For instance, one small spread down the road a bit an older fella and his wife have a real nice spot. But the once scenic stream has grown over the years flooding his lawn and a few more acres downstream. He had no idea why, never thought of it much he said. So that got my foot in the door. Then we got to talking and he gave me permission to hunt his property, but, the bird hunting sure isn't what it use to be. Well enter what a thirty pound coon eats to stay that fat and I got permission to set steel everywhere but in the mailbox. Now everyone sees me lugging out beaver and a few coon and word spreads quickly like. Local deer hunters want beaver and coyotes removed, and a local farmer as well. Problem is, I just don't have the time! Work really ruins my fun in the fields and streams. A few words in a small town travel quick.

Big Twin, I seen a guy having problems with beaver last season and my son & I stopped by and asked him if he needed some assistance free of charge. He was thrilled that we stopped by and begged us for help. That ended up in 5 beaver taken with 330's and 7 new spots to trap due to word of mouth which ended up being very successful. As recently as last week, I have been getting calls from road commissioners begging for help as well. Thats a whole different ball of wax though. I dont have a commercial license for which I would need to trap out of season unless the IL DNR grants me permission to help others in these situations. Like you said "A few words in a small town travel quick".

You got that right 365. Seems like every farm is taken by another trapper. Wish i could travel, the most mom will take me is 5 miles away.
I'm not complaining, most moms wouldn't dream of taken their skunk smelling kid on a trapline!

If you take them plat books and copy the pages on a copy machine you can glue/tape them together and make an "Empire" map for the season and highlite the areas you can trap for a quick reference! Also makes it easy to see the coverage you have in any given area too!
