The trench set and step down dirt hole is one and the same.....
Step down...Dig a hole about 7 inches long.about 3.5 inches wide ,about 4 inches deep.May need a bit wider if use'n a 1.3/4...Now dig your bait hole strait back under the sod at least 6 inches.May need to shave the sides a bit under the sod on sides. This is for the free movement of the trap when it fires.I dont like anything bigger than 1 3/4 to hard to make the set.Leave a 1/2 inch of dirt in bottom of trench. You can stake either in the hole or on the out side back edge.Place trap in hole wiggle it into loose dirt until it beds.Does not have to be rock solid.Reason for this set is ,1 step..it's last step.I like the levers, one towards the hole, other by my feet, dog to the right.Back lever should be touching the back of the trench.Take sifted dirt work it over the trap, lift sides that you shaved work dirt under neath the sides, over the trap.Finish covering the center over the trap.(I like a pan cover at this set). After the trap is covered, smooth the hole from Back to front.Take your Glove hand and as you go foward, start to tape down the dirt towards the hole. Now put a small ridge behind the hole at the lip, wide as the hole and about a inch high. When the fox steps over the the ridge of dirt,it's next step is the pan.Your trap pan should be about 1.5 to 2 inches below the ground level at this point
The only step in this set is the pan.Killer set!!!!Take the rest of your dirt, either add to the backing or i like to sift it around where i was kneeling.Everything you use ..urine ,bait, lure goes in the hole. You want th critter to step down to see what is what.Once the critter breaks it knee to stoop down,it's to slow to pull back when the trap fires, cause all the weight is on it one leg...If you have sandy soils...This wouldn't be a set for you..If you got loamy soil. This set is Great..I use it about or more than half my sets....
Good luck......Frank
