I going to try to dye some of my traps (2 doz.) with the red dye,and red stag horn sumac berries. It is in a RUSS CARMAN book I have reading. No Heating up the dye.It is a cold soak for a week or two.The traps should turn coal black. Has any one tried this or heard of it ? bob

Not the cold soak.
If you do how ever use the berries no need for the red dye.If your going to boil, take the berries and put them in cheese cloth. This way the berries don't get in your springs and wedged in the levers. When you take the traps out of the dye, wash them off with a hose while hot. This way all the residue gets wash off and doesn't end up in your wax.
Hoped this helped you some......

I put the traps in the mix yesterday(again this is a cold bath). It has sumac berries and red dye.The berries are for tanic acid.Heat breaks down the acid, this is why he does it cold.I will post some pic's when they are done(.About a week or two.) bob

What book was that in?I still don't understand the red dye part.Wouldn't that just seperate from the water and settle on the bottom? The tanic acid makes sence ,as it would etch the metal.
The real reason to boil is to get the traps clean.if they come out pink I don't care as long as they are clean and not contaminate my wax.

CANINE TRAPPING FUNDAMENTALS & TRAPLINE TIPS/ BY RUSS CARMAN. It was put out (I think) around 2007.After a few days it dissolves.I mixed it with hot water (the dye)and dissolved alot..After it cooled ,I added the berries, the water was allready black.from the dye.I mixed good, added the traps. I will see what happens and let you know...

i have read that book and i just dont see the need to let my traps in water for 1 to 2 weeks unprotected....i just boil saves me time..
did you know that when your springs start to rust and that fist 5 thousands of the spring is rusted thru your spring lose a good bit of power...its something like 20%...so the quicker i can get my traps in and out of the water in the unprotected state the better....
im also not a believer in pre rusting my traps....they will rust after a catch and hold better dye the next year....for new traps i just degrease and wax.....i have been doing this for a few years and like my method...

I have used the cold soak for the last 3 years. It does ok. Layer of traps, covered with walnut hulls, then repeat, add clean water. While they soak I do other chores. Personally, I dont think the cold soak is as good as boiling, but each must manage thier time accordingly. I haven't noticed any adverse reaction from the animals either with the cold soak. This is in a plastic drum, not a metal one. One last benefit, keep your walnut water, some dirty traps early in the season can be thrown in, does a real good job of cleaning. But, don't let the freeze lock up your traps.

i feel trappers over think things at times.i fell in that trap one season using formula one and let me say this much.it did not affect my catch rate but how ever it did over work my butt redipping every single trap over and over during season, learned real quick to stay with what works for me and to stop over thinking and i learned that some times a short cut is not the best tool

I will post some pic's when these are done, even if I am not satisfied with it. AGAIN<I THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT/COMMENTS ON THIS MATTER,AND PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING IT IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN LEARN THANK YOU BOB

Sumacs
There 3 types.Staghorn, poison vine and tree
The poison Ivy and Poison Oak are a (Sumac). Those would be your vines...
The Sumac tree also called the (posion tree) Will have like little thorns on the bark with white flowers that make loose clusters of berries when ripe.
Staghorn ..My grandmother made Lemonade from.MMMMM.good stuff. Now thats a tree also.It will have red dense cluster of berries when ripe. That what you make your (DYE) from.
Now that being said. When I was at Ft.Sill for 2 years I don't think I ever seen the staghorn in Oklahoma.....

i tried the cold soak with sumac berries last year and dont like it it etched the traps like vinegar, and they were starting to rust before they dried off
