A friend of mind (Troy Erickson) came out with a video(Logging Roads, Lanes &Laminations) that he talks about (bear bait stations) Where coyote and coons, that were taken there----there magnet areas for other fur bearing animals. Its a really good video and the part about modifying your traps by Jason Dufresne is worth it alone. In Wisconsin there is a area that the martin has been reintroduced but there is no open season at this time yet. There is a site out of Greenbay,Wi.-----------http://blackdogsden.proboards.com------Troy is Blackdog,he loves to cainine trap

I just couldn't beleave the size of the coons that would stick there heads in a 120's at these sites just to get the sweet goodies.I did better on Martens at these sites than Fishers.I think it was because the martens where more populated in these areas.I never did set a foothold cause I split the lines.I always double set these sites also.I needed too until the red squirrels got thinned out....

Most of my fishers were caught along creeks and rivers where it ran through ceders and tagalder----smoke fish or muskrat leg for bait in coni boxes. I actually nail them targeting coons. It may be just a fluke but the coons I get by bear baits or old overground logging trails seem to be larger---don"t ask me why---I don"t have a good answer. It may be the pecking order or the loner coons. One thing about bear baits .1 wait tell the bear hunters are done with there season and 2. The bear hunters will sometimes drop bait after the season to fatten the bears up for the winter,in that case use gland lure and no bait.

Dang Bill...Thats I trip of a life time..I hope that you can still do that trip.Plus you still have to give Mark a hard time LOL................
sshoemd....The best luck with fishers was where the ridge came down and met the bottom.Ceders was always a plus.If you could find a Beaver dam in a Ceder thicket that was a killer spot.Even if the dam was busted out.I set both sides. If I had a ridge that ran parrallel with a swamp, stream ect: I'd set one cubby on the ridge and one set low by the stream.I took my first and only double on Fisher that way.

I am the author of the article. I didn't even know this site existed untill yesterday. I NEVER copied anyones thread, or article etc. So lets get that straight right now. I wrote that article almost a year ago. Been doing MN state demos on the topic for years. Been using it for longer. As a bear guide I knew the locations worked. I was told by someone on this site I was being a plagerist.
So the record is set straight.
Thanks,
Jim Wallner

Jim...Welcome.....
That was just some fun posted above.Hope no feelings where hurt...We've been talking about the bear bait sites in other post for 2 months now.......
I still think it's neat how trappers come up with the same conclusions even tho they are from differant areas.Thats how I came acrossed the idea also.I help a Maine Bear guide. When we would bait sites I seen all types of scat and tracks at these locations. What was weird about the bait sites that all the local boys never trapped them.I was the new guy in town catching all type of fur at these locations.Did better on martens than fishers at these sets as posted above.I never set foot holds at these locations, cause I split the lines.
Did you run sweets or meat baits?Does your state have a month of pre-bait before season opens? If a sow with cubs found a bait location did she run everything else off and claim the location? what I call cubbed up(claimed by a sow) These locations didn't produce until late.Did you have the same problem?
Hope you keep posting...more seasoned trappers the better...Frank
