Has anyone used the body grip set Jonny Thorp Shows In his mink video? The set involves a 160 or220 with a chunk of fish on the trigger and the trap set tight against something solid that the trap can bounce off of. LT Grey is the only other person I know who uses this set. I think it is one of the faster sets to use on a coon or mink line and I plan on incorporating it to my line this year...

sounds interesting. how do you keep the trap in place?? I think the only problem would be with coons "hand" firing the trap trying to get the bait.

I thought the same thing but I have been told the set is very effective on coon. I think the fact that trap jumps at the animal might help? This will be my first year running body grips like this I am going to use 220's as we have a lot more coon than mink in my area. Anxious to try this

sounds like it would work for marten and muskrats too. maybe bobcats and lynx? why does it have to bounce off of something solid?

so the trap jumps out at the critter that sets it off. thinking it would keep the trap from slapping their nose I guess.

You put the body grip flat against something solid like a mud bank log Etc. When the jaws close it launches the trap off the solid object... In states that have no exposed baits you can cover the whole thing with grass and it will still work the same.. Or so I have been told.

I never knew JT showed that set on one of his videos. Been using it then for a couple of years on coon. I have been digging a pocket up on the bank so when a coon comes by it is looking straight in the hole. Throw some bait in and guard it with a 5x5. Been working for me the last couple of years. Those CMTs 5x5s are tough. Coon I have caught don't seem to move much when hit with one of them. No disturbance at the set at all. Doesn't even look like they even kick.

But if it is munching on the bait, why would it be any different then if it was walking through and tripped the wires?

But if it is munching on the bait, why would it be any different then if it was walking through and tripped the wires? The coon would be DoA doing that. What they are worrying about is since coon are notorious reachers, the chances are that you could get a coon by the leg instead of behind the ears.

I'm not saying it won't work but it sounds like a pretty poor set to me. Why not just lay the trap on the ground? Not trying to discourage anyone from trying it but I'd have the trap well swiveled and secured. You know your going to have reach-ins.
Halfton, your set sounds good.

I have given that set a lot of thought since the first time I picked up a body grip trap, and I can't knock it, cause I haven't tried it, but there is something about it I don't like.
For one thing, everything would have to be exact. The target would have to be standing EXACTLY squarely in front of the trap (guidesticks would help) otherwise he might get slapped with a spring or his ear might get pinched and he would be a trapshy critter on your line.
One of the advantages of a conibear is that when other sets are frozen solid the conibear will still function, but if it leaning against a mud bank, it wil freeze in place, just like a leghold.
I think I'll stick by the tried and trued sets.

I suspect It would be very non-productive use of a body grip . Jonny "The Great Huckster" .

Watched one of his demos at the NYSTA convention and he said it is a great otter set at bridges. He buys all the rubbery toy sharks from the dollar store.Kinda like a bottom edge set.
