made for last year ,and it helped alot ,not saying that i was faster with it ,but felt good after a few cold yotes and could do some more ,lol theres a trick on them getting them started is the same hind legs done ,and the trick was the where the saddle end (near hind leg) was cut or it would tear the beely and not to force it to pull the hide come down may need a little help pulling down(cut here and there) like i said was not real fast but man the next morn'n was a lot easier when waking up and for guys that pull in some numbers ,I would say go for it ,a nice asset to have

Putting mine together tomorrow. I've had the material for a while(old tubular steel I got when I helped my buddy take down a gazebo)and decided to cut the components and get her up and ready for the season. Pulling cold coons is no fun and I'm looking forward to trying the machine out but sadly as we all know not for some months yet.

Yep, I use it on coyotes and coon. Most of my critters are cold by the time I get to skinnin' so it sure helps out on the back and shoulders.

What else do or have you guys used to anchor the hide other than the vice grips, and did work well? I ask because I have an an old anchor mate that was given to me and I got it back in working order. I am thinking about nailing in a frame to the garage studs and pulling semi horizontally, but need an idea for something to hold the hide (golf ball and rope?). I can't really figure out how to mount the vice grips using wood. Any ideas?

Make some brackets to weld you vice grips to and bolt to the wood. I have though about the golf ball and a rope, have skined deer that way but it damanges the hide where the rope pulls tight while skinning a deer, would think it would do the same to other fur.

I would have to get some steel to practice on first, probably been about 20 years since I last welded anything more than stiffening up a boat trailer fender. I do have access to stick welder though. Just trying to think of something I have on hand all ready. Thought maybe a couple of c-clamps and blocks, but how to anchor so I don't fuss more with them than what I do now without them.
No pics, I am thinking up ideas yet. The walls in the garage are unfinished, 2X4 studs are exposed, spaced 16 on center, no insulation. (Gets cold out there in Dec. and Jan.) Cement floor with block sill. Exposed rafters, no insulation.

not all the skinning machines have to be vertical ,a horzonal will will work also ,hiost are for vert., winches are for horz. It depends on you over head space I was lucky that my garage is not finished so was able to put it up in the top of the truss's ,but a table would have worked also
the golf ball and rope works but need to put it at base of the tail the belly skin is thin on mine I have a plate with 4 holes, used concrete anchors and welded a pipe and nut with a pipe over it ,bolt was tacked to not come apart ,the top pipe has a plate washer welded on this makes a swivel ,and on that pipe has chain welded on ,than the vise grips with re-bar weleded in the jaws ,the vise grips/ the bar makes it quick hook up ,the only thing that I should of done was make it adjustable in height
the shoulders and back are more thinkful ,so the grip are a few

Trapdad - take a look at the pic below. I have two vice grips that i placed the threaded tensioning bolt through the chain. You can anchor the center of the chain anywhere you desire, and have the same clamping style that a lot of trappers are using. A horizontal platform will work just as good, but might take some time getting use to. I hope this helps!

Lyonch do you like the welder's vice grips or the ones with rebar welded in better?

This is how im setting mine up to chris, by using the chain i can adjust the height of the claps so im working standing up on the smaller critters!

This is NOT my set up... But from all the set ups i've seen the one at the top of the page is what i plan to make mine like.... My garage isnt close to tall enough for a set up like lyonch has, so im goin to make on i can use out side... i plan on making my base outta unistrut so i can put some drop in ancors in the drive way and bolt the base down when i use it www.wild-about-trapping.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8713

Yoteskinner this is by far the best advice given in that thread: One thing I can tell you not to do (especially if your truck frame is rusty) is to use it to pull frozen cable stakes out, seems the ground was stronger then the truck frame
Wow I can see me doing that! Hold my beer, watch this!
I figure if I run out of beat up sleds to fix I might make one before next season. No power in my shed, just propane lights. I have good overhead at 16', but it is in the middle of the room. What height do you suppose would peel a good sized coyote? 10' comfortably from the base should do it eh? I like the idea of a height adjustable base. Either by chains or maybe pins in the vertical portion.

big- those welder vice grips have rebar welded in them as well. I prefer the plain old vice grips with rebar welded to them myself. It seems like you have an easier time getting the clamps where you want and you can see it better.
Mark - you can see on my wall mount that i have other holes drilled in the sides. This allows me to adjust the height to match which animal i am skinning at the time if i so choose so. A chain is a great idea and give a person a lot of flexibility in the shed and can be tucked away as well.
I did not get a close up pic tonight. i have a ton of things going on and hopefull next week they will slow down and i can put my braind back on trapping!!

lynoch I believe that is perfect for I have to work with. I can anchor the winch to a very heavy work bench and build an anchor point between the stud and on the sill for the chain. The Pulley can get hung from a truss. I would still be a near vertical pull.
Plus I can still take it down and remake as I get the money to finish the garage. I won't have to worry too much about the height since I got plenty of chain and can adjust for the different critters. Skinning coyotes and coons from a couple of ropes hung the truss was pain. Start them while standing up and end up kneeling in the mess to finish the head.
Do you still use two vice grips?
Thank you everyone. Alot of good ideas to keep in mind for future use.

Good point Wolf, I'll have to rethink pull distance. Might have to rearrange where my bench is so I pull from under the peak.
Mark, can't wait to see the pictures!
