thought id take some time to talk about trapping and maybe share a little bit of my knolage about it well boys and girls lets se where this takes me.
lets start off with (wetland trapping), now wetland trapping in pretty basic and also typicaly easy varyes from the pocket to the drownder rig, all the way to the standard blind set. when wetland trapping i like to have a few basic tools on me there's the trowel, drownder cables, staks, bait/luer, and the traps i use for whetland trapping are typically 1.5s, any size conibear, #11/#1/#0 ls, and then you have your mb-750s and or #3/4s for beaver. my favorate set when wetland trapping is a pocket set, also like castor sets, shaved bank sets, drownder, blind, culvert, cubby. and thats about all i use when it comes to wetland, critters i like to trap/target when wetland trapping are coon, mink, rats, otter, and beaver. when winter comes around i like to have a axe or hatchet with to chop threw ice for rat runs, other than that i like to trap open water fall threw winter.
moveing on to (dryland) trapping.
when dryland trapping i like to stay near water ways also every animale out there needs water, just like humans my primary dryland target are coon, mink, rabbit, squirrel, fox, yotes, opossums, and skunk. for these critters the trap size goes from a #0 ls to #3/#4 cs also for dryland trapping winter comes around and thing get a little tougher this is when you need to use your brain a little more, winter dryland trapping is when fallen over tree sets, cubby sets, snares, haybale sets, den sets, dry culvert sets, and snowden sets come in handy, along with wetland trapping. Anyways try to do whatever you can to make the snow your friend work with the snow not against it, sometimes snow is what will piss you off the most but you just have to work around it by useing some of the sets i mentioned above.
my knolage of fur handling/ not had to much expiernce but ill share what i know.
when handling fur its best to skin when the carcase is still warm the skin will peel right off but if this is not possable when you have time to do it you want a shed or where ever you are skinning to be the same tempature at all times if yuo are fleshing and stretching if you are just skinning then rolling up and putting in the freezer don worry about the shed temp, back to skinning.
when skinning any critter do your best to get as much fur as you can furbuyers can get crankey if you noly show up with 3 quarters of fur form yuor skinning job stay under the skin but out of the carcase stay as close as possable to the carcase thew, when fleshing comes around the amount of pressure you apply on the skin with the tool depends on the size of the animale and how tough the skin is, for examply when fleshing a rat you apply very little pressure when skinning a yote you use a decent amount of downward pressure if you use to much you will cause holes in the skin and or the fur will come out of the skin with to much pressure, when the skin is fleshed keep it dry as possable i like to have a bucket of saw dust near by, if hanging up fur the shed should stay about 70 dagrees fairenhight dont let them temp change tempiture change might cause your fur not to dry. i dont have many strethcers so i usally just skin then roll of the fur and put it in the freezer buying stretchers for this year thew.
fur prep in the order i feel is the most important
i know a little about fur prep here they are from step on being most important down.
1. before skinning brush fur for any burs ect if there is any burs in the fur and you start to skin that fur gets folded back and ajusted wich meants the burs will get spread around more fur keep the fur brished before skinning.
2. after skinning wash your fur and skin with dawn dish soap gets ride of grease and bugs.
3. when fleshing get all the fat off only apply the amount of pressure as nessasary.
4. when drying furs keep the room temp no lower than 70 dagrees fairenheight.
5. always have fur ready fr the buyer and fur that needs to be tages get that done so you dont bring fur in and have to take it back out from not being taged
good luck to all of you trappers i hope ths knolages some of yuo good luck on the line always be safe and have fun
