I have always used a 24" rebar stake. But I do use cable stakes when trapping out of my area, to cut down on weight. Used berkshire's with the point and they are a joke, the point bends usually when driving in was my experience, and it was in fairly sandy soil. This yr. I went with the fangs. very heavy stake and well thought out IMO.

With a lot of the disposiables a pilot hole may be best

Wolf fangs I think MTP now carries them too! I agree with Forrest. Although i actully never trapped with them before, I bought a bunch, and tested them for this yrs trapping. They are heavy duty stakes, that costs less then a Berkshire! @ 5.00 bucks for a dozen (just the heads) You can't go wrong. The tips wond bend, while driving them in like some of the other disposible stakes, and the body won't fold when yanking them out! from what i can tell, they are going to be my go-to stake for land trapping!

I use primarily bullet stakes for canine trapping when I dont want to use a drag. Dont have time to bother with making pilot holes with lesser cable stakes.

Since your location is in Alabama, i would't be worried too much about freeze up, so with that said i will would really look into the wolf fang line of disposables, or the pogo line of diposables. If you need some made, PM me and we can work something out!

I use 1/2 X 30" rerod but theft is not a problem and with our ground here theft is not a problem as I need a jack to get them out! LOL But I'm old school I guess but they work the best for me so far!

High Desert Spears, Wolf fang is a copy and a out right stolen copy of the HD Spears. They are not the exact same the HD Spear! It is similar but has improved features that the HD Spear does not have. You cant steal something that a person does not own! Obviously there was no copyright infringement so I doubt there was a copyright on the product and that makes it fair game in this world of business... Since the guy who promotes the WF's is a O'Gorman student I kind of doubt there is any problem with the product similarity? Out Right Stolen! lol Good Grief!!

With the area I live and trap in there is not much soil on top of the bedrock, maost area 5-6" and it is just very loose duff. I have resorted to using a 24 volt cordless hammer drill and eyebolts.
I drill a 7/16th hole in the rock then fill it with a high qualitity epoxy then I pound the 1/2" diameter eyeboly in the hole. I do this a few weeks before season opens so that the epoxy sets up well and is to full strength.
Before I moved to this area I used 1/2" rebar up to 24" long. I had to adapt or you might say evolve to a new area.

In the right soil conditions and location, I am using the HD spears (I just buy the spears that aren't made up and make my anchors at various lengths to fit my needs) but everyone talking about the wolf fangs makes me want to try them as well. I often trap close to roads and prefer drags to get the animal out of sight. Also, trapping rock bluffs for the cats where I can't use an anchor so use drags there also.

I picked up some super stakes , 18" long ,I am going to give them a try this season.I usually use good old .500 rebar ,and some drags... As for what is the best and least expensive, I would have to say rebar. You can go to some of the construction sites in your area and they will give you the drops from what they cut and used on the job.. Hope this helps ya some way .....Bob O

High Desert Spears, Wolf fang is a copy and a out right stolen copy of the HD Spears. in my book the HD is pure junk....3 of us bought 200 a piece thats 600 heads...and in our PA soil type we couldnt get them to set...so i played with them and found that if you welded a nut onto them to put your cable thru or grind off the "tit" that the cable hooks too and put a j-hook thru there they would set...then the drivers was another problem....and i should say that my customer service wasnt the best from nancy when i called to inquire about this problem....so i have since moved onto better heads that i make myself.....
