Well I got bad news for me...A land i was planing on trapping this season that is loaded with coons. I was asked to trap the coons out of there and i gladly said yes. Now i got a call saying they are not sure they want someone back there trapping due to they are worried that trapping may not be humane "way" of getting rid of them.... Just great...I got all these traps ordered now ...Guess ill hit the road and ask a few guys i know that may let me trap their ground. What do you do? All i said was the way i trap is the best way...I dont hurt animals and im very carful on how i go about it all. Told them if they change their mind to call me. Prolly come next years sweet corn season and all their corn is gone they will call me in June asking me to come trap ...Then it will nope! Have to wait till November or pay me $25 per coon + gas, if i take coon out in June.

Nathan....the position your in is to bad. However, there are ways of getting around this!
#1, when I run into these problems, the modifications done to my traps help ALOT. I explain why they are off-set, laminated, swivled, shock springs on them. I nicely explain the benefits of these mods, and how they reduce the foot damage. I often bring up the fact that trappers get caught in their traps all the time while setting traps. I explain that it does not leave a mark, or break any bones.
Most land owners find this very impressive. If they happen to doubt me, and are looking for proof, I will set a trap I brought along, and snap in on my hand. Seeing is beleiving right? A little bit of pain, for a property, is a small price to pay IMO!!
Worse comes to worse, use a cage traps for their land! that usally works when all else fails!
PS. Bring a modifiyed trap, and show them the mods, and explain to them what, and why the mods are added!
Good Luck!

Get some live traps, a good foot in the door tool, and DPs are good also to help with people that need a little understanding of how trapping works! Like Mini said sell the truth some people will think beartrap and have no clue what we use and why!

Nate
When it comes to the common folk all they can think about is the traps on the cartoons with big teeth.I for one carry traps and snares with me when I ask permission.99% of the farmers and land owners never seen a Dog Proof trap.I have a few places where I can only trap in a certain way.
Some places I can only trap with dp's.A few places I can only trap the ponds with 110's and not allowed no land traps or footholds in the water.I found out most people don't want to say NO.It's up to us to educate them for the most part.
Just last week I stopped at a place and he has bird dogs and pay to hunt.No way no how I was allowed to trap or even look at this place. After I showed the owner a few things I got permission to trap close to the buildings (barns and feed shed) with Dp's for coons and I can snare everything after x-mas.I am not allowed footholds at anytime.
All hope isn't lost..You just might need to change with the situation..
Good luck Buddy..............

WELL HERES THE DEAL GUYS. I went out and looked around this guys place, he is a friend of a friend sorta deal. And i was gonna take his coons out for free. VS him hiring a ADC worker to do it. I showed him the traps i would be using, #1 bridger. I told him how they work and why i used them. Showed him they are made to hold not break legs. Showed him by setting one off that it really isnt painful. And explain a poorly set trap is the cause to damage and i assured him i had knowledge in setting and making the right traps and trap sets to avoid damage.
Gave him refrence as well!
I also told him i would be using lures that would avoid catching any of his animals around the house.
I already got money into his place and i havent made a dime out of it...Thats when i shoulda been a mean trapper and made him sign a nasty ADC contract i suppose. Thought id be nice though...See where it got me?
I would use DPs and cadge traps up close to the house and foot holds long ways out in the woods. That was the game plan. I dont have enough $$ to buy DPp and cadge traps enough to cover his land. Nor do i have a way to take that many cadge traps.
Unreal...People dont think...'hey it cost money for a guy to plan a trap line" They just think trapping supplys are cheap to buy and heck you can change your mind whenever you feel like it no bigy...Well when planing to trap hundreds of acres and having to order like 5 dz traps and tones of lures...woulda been nice to know this 4 months ago.
Im pratty sure i still have enough ground though. I got another 200 acres i need to call on and set up a time for me to come and look around.

Location my friend.
Thats what you need to learn.I can cover 3 farms side by side with 2 traps, maybe 3 if use'n a post set.Sweet spots You need to learn to pick them out.
As far as coon make the coon come to you.Don't go set every trail unless your snare'n or blind setting.Pre bait those bad boys then catch them all in 1 spot and set heavy.Catch 8 to10 coon in 1 spot in 1 check.Set it for 3 nights then pull the traps for the next pre-baited spot. You don't need 500 traps to pile up critters, just play it smart.
Example...I have as of right now 65 plus farms.I am not going to run those all in one day.I'll will set about 20 of them up.I take the easy fur fast. When a farm gets to slow I pull those traps and set a new farm on fresh fur.Now my daily totals went back up.If you keep leep frogging farms and sets you will always be in front of new/fresh fur.
I don't think I ever have out more than 50 land traps anymore.Water traps I set heavy and hard. There I'll set 3 or 4 traps per stop with 40 plus stops. That will burn alot of traps. Then again when running mink after 14 day mark they al get moved on new areas...
Hope this helped you some. With 60 traps you should pile up more fur than you realize....
Can you get on land beside that place of intrest? If you can k-9's roam and will come to you if your on the travel route. As far as coon you need to find the den sites and cut them off to feeding areas...
Some places you just need to cut your loses and go with something easier..We all did that a few times LOL,,,

Nathany93; ewok is telling straight up! Last year a fellow came to me and begged me to trap the beaver off of him. I explained that doing ADC on beaver would not hardly pay my gas but if he would wait until season started and let me trap for other furbearers, I would be glad to. He said that was fine. I caught 8 beaver out of one trap on a small slough they were cutting. It tickled him to death (I thought). With season coming up now, I asked him if I could trap on him this year. NOPE!! No explanation as to why. SO- cut your loss and find more territory. I went to the farmer just to the south of him (where there was much better creeks running together and better pasture land for the coyotes) and he said you bet! I also went to the farmer to the west and also got permission. I lined up 9 additional farms with much better trapping area. If I had stayed on that one farm, I would not have gotten all the better ones nearby. And like Ewok, I have more this year than I can handle. But it is nice to hold a few in reserve. After season, if I didn't trap a farm, I will go to the landowner and explain I just had to much to cover. But if he has any problem at any time, just let me know. Sometimes that keeps your foot in the door. Just be sure that if he calls you -- GO! see him.
HANG IN THERE!
