Here's a first for me and I think I need help. NO, I know I need help. I have done ADC work but for the first time, I have run up against a groundhog. Next to a church there is a watermelon and cantaloupe patch. The guy swears it is a groundhog and says he has seen it there. When he told me, I figured it to be coon. But I checked and it didn't look like coon. No sign of coon. One of the cantaloupe was half eaten "INCLUDING THE RIND" and I have not seen coon do that. Anybody want to venture a guess? If it is a groundhog, does anyone have suggestion. We do not have very many groundhog here, I have only seen a couple and I know I don't have a fruit base or plant base lure to use.

Why not use a cage trap with Watermelon and Canteloupe for bait?

That was my first guess. I put out 2 cage traps and baited with a cantaloupe that was half eaten.
I was hoping to find something else that would attract him if it is a groundhog. He has the whole field to pick from on cantaloupe and watermelon, so not sure the cages will work using that.
What about apple oil, loganberry oil, sweetcorn oil? It would take me 4 or 5 days to get it here if it will work.

If you think it is a groundhog, you would be better served trying to look for its den and any trails coming into the field.
Don't know if it has occurred to you or not..but have you considered the possibility of coyotes? They love melons.

Sniperbbb; I don't think it is coyotes. I know they will destroy melons in a hurry, but the location isn't right. In town within feet from houses, highway, and it is out in the open. And I didn't think a coyote would eat the rind.

Sniper; Thanks for the tip on the trail or den also. I think it is moving along a fence row. Problem is there are so many town dogs running in the immediate area, and with the drought, track of any kind is nearly impossible to find. Tomorrow will take your advise and walk out the fence row.

Cages and drift fencing would be best. If you know where the den is it shouldn't be hard to set up between it and the melon patch.

Since we dont have any groundhogs here, what do they normaly eat? What do you fellas use for bait most of the time? They mainly eat grass, fruits and your garden. I mainly just use either snares, conibears, or double door cage traps depending on location and relevant regulations for said location.

Try some marshmallows they're said to work very well. There's one that lives by my buddy's place who just loves hotdogs and he eats them raw to boot ;D

If you feel you need bait a few lettuce leaves and a chunk of apple will do but with good fencing to guide and proper trap placement it is not necessary.

crows will that also on the melons ,but find the den and it will be easy ,a trap will do also just dont give it enough to get back into the hole ,snares ,body grippers, cages al work
salt and if using plant materal use the the plant(like the ones from the nursery ) the plant will work longer for smell and you not need to change it daily cabbage, apples are two at the top strawberries also

cdr; Thanks to you and all others. Surely I can take all the advise and come up with some results. Tried over-ripe cantaloupe in one cage trap last night with no catch. Put another cage in and used a little castor I made up thinking might also be coon coming in. No coon but big old tom feral housecat. Sent him on his way to see Jesus, and you can guess what his meat will go for. LOL HERE KITTY KITTY!
For those who said use snares or coni's: In Oklahoma, you have to have a NWCO permit or be licensed ADC agent to use them. If anyone reads this thread from Oklahoma-- bear that in mind to keep yourself from getting in hot water with ODWC wardens.

I never knew Coyote liked watermelons. I don't think we can grow them up here. I tried one year and got a couple that were the size of a softball. Cute little things, but far from what I see in a grocery store. David

There are very few true carnivores out there. Coyotes are omnivores, which means they are opportunists. Fox are as well.

IS THIS A GROUNGHOG!!!! LMOAO - so far, 2 house cats, 1 possum, 1 stinker This pic was taken after I had put it in the truck - hauled 2 miles from town and taken after I took it out of the truck. It was a little upset as my pic shows it's tail curled back ready to do business. But I carefully opened the cage door and the skunk came out and on his merry way. I released it in an area I trap, so maybe when he is prime, I'll get another shot at him.

Not sure if has crossed your mind or not but it's probably deer, they love melons, I know you said it's in town but most of the cities around here even have archery seasons because deer are eating everyones flowers and gardens
