I'm going through some of my #1 stoploss type traps trying to inspect, tune and get them ready for the new season. I bought some new Duke #1 guard traps because they are a copy of the old Blake & Lambs and I liked them years ago. Also of course the price was better then the others even if the quality was not up to my expectations. I have deburred, bent things and aligned other things to get them prepared. After I had done several of these Dukes, I took a look at one of my Sleepy Creek #1 stoploss traps I had purchased last season. I barely used these Sleepy Creek traps and was utterly shocked when I looked at one trap and found part of the trigger cracked. Isn't there any brand of traps made in this style that are not junk? Sleepy Creek are the most expensive stoploss trap made today. You would think the quality would reflect that. It doesn't. David

Why doesn't trap companies want to make traps better? It is VERY sad to see they require so much work on the then you find a cracked trigger, sorry to hear that,Its nice to see people like Sterling,MB and some companies trying to do better,we need to demand them to buy better parts and make better stuff, sorry that happened to ya David!!!! May be better to latch on to some older ones in good shape as they were made better then. I do like the Sleepy Creek 1.75s but I replaced all the dogs on them as the bend so easy!

I buy any and all Blake and Lamb stop-losses I can get my grubby little hands on. I really dont care for the designes that have the guard under the pans. Pain the but to set. Especially with gauntlets on and I dont like the pan flipping up like it doesn when they fire.

Duke has done a lot of work to the their guard trap to get it right. Tom Olson, aka Bogmaster, has done a lot of testing and consulting on this trap. The older model duke guards are junk so make sure you are getting the new ones.

I have said it before, but here goes again. I dont think a stoploss is really needed if the trap is set right and set so the animal can get to deeper water easy and quickly. That being said stoploss traps do have thier place.

That being said stoploss traps do have thier place. I agree 100%. However, I'm interested in what happens when I'm not there to control it. Like water levels changing, like junk getting in the way of reaching deeper water. I feel that a stoploss will drown a Muskrat just the same as any other trap. So I guess I'm just having extra precautions. I don't think a common #1 long spring or #1 coil really have enough weight. David
