gland lures
gland scent are used for many reasons to the canines .
rather it's marking the area to warn off intruders, stached food to even look for a mate thats in heat. thats why it's important to fully understand how the gland lures come in to play.when you use it on the backing for say a dirt hole then it's letting the canine know that food was left there, but some times that's not what they want ,maybe they have a full gut from a farmers pig or watermellon from the patch(YES THEY EAT WATERMELLONS) for what every reason they are not hungrey a the time. now lets say you put out a scent post that night a canine comes incontact with it. what do you think will happen.he will always 9 times out of 10 mark that post ,was it for food no ,was it for a mate maybe but that depends on the time of the season but i feel the real reason is to warn off intruders.now lets talk about the matrix gland lures pretty much works the same way except it lets other canines know that it's in heat and looking for a mate.no matter how they work ,they work but by thinking out side the box you learn to use it in different ways and when that happens you get maxium results from your gland lures
last year me and asa lenon was talking about cats and he made a
statement that hit home.for months i had been working on a gland lure and testing it but every time i check several post sets the stake was knocked down.i thought that the lure was causing the canine to roll never in my mind did it come to me that it was cats rubbing on the post.cats loves gland lures it don't matter if it's mink, fox, coyote or cat if it is a gland lure it will produce cats.so if you see a post knocked down set a rub post close by .
another key point is this always use bait when you use gland lures at hole type sets.trust me you will be glad you did.
coursity type lures
now this is simple any ingredent that a animal has never smelled the odor becomes a coursity factor and works any time of the year.if you can get any animals coursity up then and if you done your job right he will be in the fur shed.let me shed a little more light on this subject i have heard over and over that last year this type of coursity lure worked great but the next season it was worthless and no good. well let me bust a bubble here. the lure never changed it was the animal once that animal has smelled that odor it is no longer a coursity lure to that animal to others yes but not to that animal thats why you have several different ingredents in lures for a example some formulas has sexual, food, coursity an teratoral (sorry can't spell that word) when one fells some thing else picks up.lets say you trap the same area year after year how long to you think it will take for them to get a custom to the coursity odor.now the pups you will still pick up but what about the old dogs?thats why i change lures every year.
food lures
i will more then likely get slammed on this one but this is what i have seen here in the south.food lure don't work here very well due to the fact that we have a two deer per day during deer season which runs from oct- last of jan meaning there are tons of gut piles and wounded deer that hunters lost meaning a large food supplys.i have seen were they cut 1 hind qt off and left the rest but that just makes it easier for the canines to get free food.now in wyo it was a different case once the snow hit and the ground froze it woked great with a ldc call at the set.every lure has it's place you just have to learn and test and see what works for you.
